While reading a thread on Naps basing, I wondered what gamers prefer. I used to do single base, coming from GW school, but switched when I started Napoleonics. I'm glad I did; quicker to base, quicker to transport and to move on the battlefield (especially when changing formations) and most important, I find it looks better and allows for small-diorama type units. Single of course also offers advantages, mainly the flexibility when playing different rules & the absence of re-basing needs. Might be others I don't see. So, for those basing armies (skirmish games obviously using single base) what do you do? |

I do both! And in multiple scales as well. It's all part of the sickness that is miniatures wargaming

Even in Warhammer I try to base some in groups, though I always have "change" available. |

For Napoleonics I always base in groups of 3 or 4 – Command figs being the exception. mjc |

Singles suck except for skirmish. Multiples in all big games, even WAB. |

Multiple figure bases for the reasons you give. I have never skirmished with Naps or removed figures. |

Base almost everything as single. I use magnets as the base and attach them to a properly sized steel plate that can vary with the game rules. |

Single basing isn't really practical once you have more than a hundred or so figures on the table; multi-basing of some sort is a must. Most historical mass battle rules don't require figure removal anyway, so there is really no downside. Magnets need to be very strong if you use them to multi-base 25mm metal figures; if you pick the base up using a figure, the usual result is for the base and the rest of the figures to fall
It really depends what sort of games you play the most. If most of your gaming is mass battle with hundreds of figures a side, multi-basing is clearly the way to go. If most of your games are small (less than a hundred figures) and allow figures to act individually, use single basing. |
