I just posted this on my blog link but I'll put it up here to since I'll probably get more feedback.

"The Webbies want your mind"

So says the back cover blurb of Olympica, an old sci-fi wargame (of the Metagaming variety) from back in the mists of time. You old dogs may remember this one, having saved up your pennies to buy these little games that came in plastic bags (hey, c'mon, it was 1978 – I was 11). Anyway, inspired by some of the fan-made upgrades that you can see in the boardgamegeek entry link I'm considering doing one myself, with miniatures – sculpted board with terrain, and 15mm minis.

And thinking about those, I'd like to try to heave close to the original look and feel. For the UN Marines, I've already decided I'd like to use Rebel Miniatures Earth Force Marines. For the UN vehicles, Rebel's grav tanks should do nicely. The UN also has these funky drilling machines (because their enemy lives in tunnels) and I think I could convert Rebel's combat flatbed into one.

But, I'm stuck on the Webbies. They're kinda like group-mind space communists I think (on close reading of the rules fluff). So, I'm taking recommendations for good 15mm troops to use for these guys. I'm pretty sure I won't find fishbowl type helmets on minis at this scale but anything similar would do. Suggestions?

I had some of these game but not this one. Loved them. I was 15 in 1978 and nuts about trains, not games until a bit later. Memories! Interesting idea.

GZG's spacesuit guys would work better for the UN? I have them. Great figs. Check 15mm.uk for the Webbies.

The grav tanks are out of stock. Seeing them in person, I was not keen on them. The split frame concept was interesting, the top lifting off, but it just didn't do it for me. Too fiddly. Love JBR's stuff!

GZG just added some good APC/Lite Tanks at the very end of their 15mm vehicles pages. Check them maybe.

The pictures on the GZG site aren't so clear, but what I can make out of those spacesuit dudes you mention look good. Do you have any closeup pics of yours CPBelt?

I'll try to get some this weekend and post them to my blog.

Hmmm … 1978. I had graduated from high school, made my first run at college, gotten (and lost) my first real job, toured beautiful southeast Asia (twice) on Uncle Sam's dime and come back with a bunch of colorful ribbons which in combination with 75 cents will get me a senior coffee at McDonald's, and been out of the army for four years. Oh, and I owned a copy of Olympica but, hey, that was 30 years ago.
