I'm somewhat confused about the Spanish forces that were stationed in Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War. I've seen a couple of period photographs that show troops in rayadillo uniforms and pith helmets. Am I to understand that those particular soldiers were regular Spanish troops, or would they have been the Puerto Rican volunteers raised and trained by the Spanish? I'd appreciate some clearing up about that, please. Thank you. |

Saginaw, Below is a link from a site about the campaign. link
If you click on the particular battle or action it should have OoB information. Somewhere on the site, should be exactly what you want, but I couldn't find it just now. Steve |

The uniform and pith helmet suggests Spanish regular garrison troops to me. According to Novak, the garrison of Puerto Rico was: 1 battalion Alfonso X111 regiment (991 men); 1 battalion Principado de Asturies (950 est.); 1 battalion Patria (1,029); Puerto Rican volunteer light battalion #3 (950 est.); Puerto Rican light battalion #4 (747); Puerto Rican light battalion#6 (950 est.); 12th garrison artillery battalion (830); 5th tercio Guardia Civil (749); Other (403). Total: 7,826 |

Thanks, everyone! Dennis, I have the Nofi book, as well as the Freikorps 15/Greg Novak booklet, and the Osprey offering. In the last one, the Patria battalion is also depicted in pith helmet. I guess I should get the Brassey's eventually. Proniakin, thanks for the link! Great detailed info with maps there. Unfortunately, my Spanish is somewhat broken and limited, but I can pick through it. Jeff and citizen sade, I think I'm going to assume that the majority of the Spanish in Puerto Rico used the pith helmet more often than the troops over in Cuba. Seems like even when a contingent of them were shipped to Veracruz from Cuba back in 1861, they wore straw hats, too. |

I think you are safe using a mix. Mostly sun helmet for the regular forces with a smattering of straw hats, and then for the locally-raised troops, mostly straw or other hats. |

Actually, the Novak book has a drawing of one of the local Puerto Rican units in sun helmet. |
