I've got a couple boxes of the Wargames Factory British and I've been waiting for the the Zulus to be released as I;m sure many people have too.

Unfortunately, I'm on vacation and away from home so I can't order any right now to get a first hand look.

Has anyone obtained any of these yet? How'd they look? Do you foresee any assembly or painting issues? Any other thoughts?

nycjadie02 Jul 2009 9:49 a.m. PST

They look great. I haven't assembled mine yet, but the sprues have a lot to choose from and I can't think of much to add. I also like the fact that some are slim and some are fat. It's much like the photographs I've seen of the warriors.

I'm still waiting on them to arrive at my FLGS.

I have to wait till I am back to work in the fall, or if my employment insurance kicks in over the summer. Otherwise I am living off savings for the next 2 months till I am back to work at the school. The Zulu's are definitely on of my planned purchases. I am planning on several boxes.

Cheers.

I have 150. 48 are finished. They look great.

1. Spray GW Black as primer
2. Tamiya brown overspray.
3. Sand for the flap
4. Light grey for the tails.
5. Chainmail silver for weapons
6. Black hair
7. White bits on shield.
8. Army painter strong shade.

For the next batch, I will do the shields seperately as think it will be quicker. These will be sprayed black, white or red brown as appropriate.

Mick, what brand are those bases with movement trays you are using?

Mick in Switzerland02 Jul 2009 12:20 p.m. PST

Dear War Wizard,

Some of them are the new GW War of the Ring trays. They cost about US$ 1.50 each.
The rest were custom made for me by Litko. I spent nearly US$ 300 on trays last year, just before the GW ones came out…. My design is very similar to the GW trays but they are offset by half a figure so that archers look better. I paid about US$ 5.00 each. Jim can probably repeat the item if you want it.

Mick, those look fantastic! I'm going to steal your process.

mweaver02 Jul 2009 2:24 p.m. PST

They look good. Nice job, Mick.

Mick in Switzerland02 Jul 2009 2:30 p.m. PST

Thanks everybody. At the weekend, I will post some pictures of the trays so that you can see the designs. I will also dig out the reference numbers from the Litko order.

No.

A buddy of mine got these yesterday and he really likes them, but he says that when he tried to spray them with a base coat the faces washed out because there wasn't enough depth to the detail on the married warriors' heads. Will have to see for myself as I have a few boxes coming…

Did up 5 of the ones I got. I like them. Lots of variety. Just have to be careful to align the arms or they can look starnge <chuckle> Took a tiny bit of filler around the arm/shoulder joint. if you get the shield arm too close to the torso, it makes it kinda' hard to paint ?

Two boxes are on their way. They might even be there now. I haven't been back to my room since I left earlier this morning. If they are there when I get back tomorrow morning I might not even go to bed right away but will probably go buy some glue and start assembling them when Hobby Town USA opens. We'll see how tired I am.

Pictors Studio03 Jul 2009 1:47 a.m. PST

At this point even if they do show up I think I'm going straight to bed when I get out of here.

Mick in Switzerland03 Jul 2009 1:10 p.m. PST

I missed a bit in the painting method.

1. Spray GW Black as primer
2. Tamiya brown overspray.
3. Sand for the flap
4. Light grey for the tails.
5. Chainmail silver for weapons
6. Black hair
7. White bits on shield.
--> Touch up and highlight flesh with GW Dark Flesh or Bestial Brown
8. Army painter strong shade.

They are a very well thought out set of figures. I'd give them a 7+ on anatomy. Faces 3-4. The the gear gets a 9+.
The design and layout of the sprues is amazing! They even interlock so the parts don't get crushed in the bag. Every square inch is used for spare arms, heads and weapons. The weapon choice is more than generous.
Like mentioned, a bit of care in assembly is called for. Remember these figures are mostly unclothed so sloppy seam work can look creepy. It might be a good idea to pre-glue the spears in the figures hands to assist in figuring out how to position the arms. All told, worth it for me.

I just pulled out the 2 free sample sprues I got and glued them together. Some thoughts. Good body poses, mold lines are still pretty prevalent though. Hands and faces have very little detail. Feet are much improved over the Romans though. The weapons, shields and bits are excellent. Overall its a good set and I will probably end up getting some. I hope the quality keeps improving though with the upcoming German releases.

My least favorite part of this hobby: dealing with mold lines. :(

Just finished cleaning and preparing my first 24 Zulus. It was both a chore and fun at the same time. Carving and filing down the mold lines on the figures was tedious and time consuming. I had hoped to do 48 figures last night but only made it through 24.

The fun was in arranging as many of the physical combinations of athletic poses as possible.

Hopefully I will get those first 24 painted up today and then attach the shields and pre-pare another 24 tonight.

If I could keep that pace up I could be done w/ my 450 figures in 3 weeks….but we all know thats not going to happen.
