Is there anything similar to "The Washing of the Spears" pertaining to the Boxer Rebellion? I'm starting my TSATF Boxer army and need inspiration…

Try "The Boxer Rebellion: The Dramatic Story of China's War on Foreigners That Shook the World in the Summer of 1900" by Diana Preston, Walker and Company, NY 1999.

Can't say if it similar to the Washing of the Spears, but I thought Preston's book was a good read on the topic.

I would pickup the Boxer Rebellion scenario book from On Military Matters.

1-84012 Fastoso, Mark intro by Larry Brom COLONIAL CAMPAIGNS:Boxer Rebellion (10) Wargame Scenarios covering Admiral Seymour'sRelief Attempt; scenarios cover Chinese Army vsBoxers, Chinese vs Europeans and Boxers vs ReliefForce, maps and o/b's.1 vol, 68 pgs 2003 US, MARK FASTOSO
NEW-softcover ……$20.00

It has painting guide info like Brom's original TSATF in it along with a LOT of background info.

Thanks,

John

Is there an history of the Boxer rebellion that, beside the western nations, covers the chinese point of view too? I read only the one by Peter Fleming years ago, it was well written but very pro-british and limited in scope.

Second vote for Diana Preston's work, excellent read, very detailed.
Amazon $12.00, I picked it up a used book store for $5.00.

I enjoyed Ms. Preston's work also.

I've not read "The Washing of Spears", but can suggest the following titles as being helpful to the interests of a gamer in addition to those already mentioned:

"The Fists of Righteous Harmony" by Henry Keown Boyd is similar to Flemmings and Preston's works, but offers some details not in the other two books. Preston's is probably better though overall. Refer to the bibliography of any of this or Preston's, or Flemming's book for more sources.

Osprey Campaign Series no. 85, "Peking 1900" by Peter Harrington

Osprey's Men at Arms no. 95 "The Boxer Rebellion by Lynn E. Bodin"

The Colonial Wars Sourcebook by Philip J. Haythornethwaite, not a Boxer history specifically, but has many entries with related info.

Miniature Wargames magazine Nos. 65,66,67,68 (Oct '88 thru Jan'89)

Practical Wargamer magazine Autumn '88 has a great article about the British legation with outstanding bidseye view drawing.

Tan, Chester, "The Boxer Catastrophe", 1955, Columbia University Press, New York. A respected Chinese-American historian, Dr. Tan tries to make sense of the uprising from the Chinese viewpoint. Heavy use of Chinese sources.

Duiker, William J., "Cultures in conflict: The Boxer Rebellion", 1978, Presidio Press, . An academic study of the uprising as a cross-cultural phenomenon. Well worth reading.
