I read the earlier thread on flags. I just want to make sure I've understood.

Generally (with exceptions) you want one standard bearer per Confederate regiment and two standard bearers per Union regiment.

After reading the earlier thread I had to pull extra standard bearers off Confederate bases. Luckily I hadn't gone too far with basing. Hopefully I won't have to go and put them back on..

Yep – that's what I do.

You are generally right with the 2 USA 1 CSA system of Regt/Btn Colors. As with everything else in the ACW there were some exceptions from time to time that you can either try to incorporate or ignore!!

Unless you are doing 1st Texas up at least Sharpsburg, where they had two standard bearers….one for their Regimental Colors and one for their state colors…

If your research shows a unit you want to do carried two flags say in 1862 then went to 1 after Lee sent the 1 flag order out. Do whatever you think looks best. If I paint an army with 1861 uniforms and flags, I certainly will not do a separate army for fighting in 1863. (well, ok, maybe I would, but I like losts of figures).

Good plan – to be honest, I also have a lot of one-standard Union regiments

There were so many variations between units and theaters that unless you are building a very specific army, its not worth worrying too much about (and I am a accuracy snob). All my Confederate regiments have one standard bearer with varying issues of the battle-flag and all my yankees have one standard bearer with variations on a US Flag (though I am thinking about rebasing for regimental flags. Cheers!

Billy Yank is right. There used to be a 2 volume work available on the flags of the Pennsylvania reserves and IIRC about half of them carried two flags, and half just one. But it has been a long time since I looked at that.

IF you're figure to men ratio is 1:1, yes. But if 1 figure represents more than 1 real man, why can't 1 standard bearer represent 2?

Same here I use 2 for Union, one regimental one national colours and Confederate where I have documentation I do two, otherwise one flag. I do have All my Bde and Div, and Corps commanders with AoP unit flags and confederate units with the state flag most common in the unit.
