Hello,

I've heard good things about Uncharted Seas for a while now. I think that I'll buy-in soon, but I'm not sure what faction to pick. I was hoping that some veteran player could give a brief rundown of how the factions play on the table. Of course there should be some variation, but I'm assuming that each faction's arsenal appeals to particular playstyles or tactics.

I'm especially intrigued to learn about the new Bone Griffons and Shroud Mages. Has anyone played or played against them much yet?

Thanks,
John

Let's see. A quick thumbnail sketch.

Dragon Lords -- Very maneuverable because they ignore the wind, and relatively fast. They're claim to fame is that they have the only aircraft carrier. Well, it is a dragon carrier, but the dragons are relatively effective. Decent gunnery, fair boarding combat, interesting magic.

Dwarves -- They also ignore the wind but because of steam power, not magic. Their ships are well armored and heavy on the firepower but are weak in boarding combat. They're also relatively slow. Nonetheless, they're a very powerful fleet when handled properly.

Orcs -- Hideous firepower forward but relatively small broadsides. Most rely on the wind, although the smallest vessels do not. They're terrific at boarding combat (in the truest sense of "terrific"), and deadly when ramming.

Humans -- Jack of all trades. Decent broadsides, middle of the road for just about everything. They're affected by wind direction so can be sitting ducks unless handled skillfully.

Elves -- Very fast and maneuverable, but are also affected by the wind. Weak in boarding combat, average in broadsides. But they have some powerful magic that can have a tremendous effect in augmenting their capabilities.

Bone Griffons (undead) -- Not played them yet. Their ships are configurable to some extent which can give them powerful close-in broadsides or powerful long-ranged area-of-effect weaponry. Too soon for me to say.

Shroud Mages (?chaos dwarves?) -- Similar to dwarves but not quite as strong in defense and gunnery. They're alleged to have some powerful magic but I haven't seen that yet.

Sorry, but that's about all that I can tell right now (in a time crunch). I suggest you visit Spartan Games' forum. There's a lot of good information there about play styles for each faction and much more detail on the capabilities of each fleet.

About how big are the models? I know it says 1/600 scale but that doesn't help much as I don't know what they consider the size of a "real" one to be. :)

Thanks,
Martin

A friend brought his fleets over a few weeks ago for a demo game and unless I miss my guess the big ships are five or six inches long. Pretty darn big, really.

The smallest ships are around an inch or so.

Thanks guys, that's just what I was looking for.

They're roughly twice the size of the equivalent GW Man O' War ship, if you're familiar with those ships.

The Dragon Lords ships that I have range from about 1-1/2 inches for the Frigate up to almost 7 inches for the Battleship.

Does anyone have more of a feel for the Bone Griffons?

Speed?
Range? (Sound like those trebuchets have some)
Fire Power?
Directionality of fire power?
Magic?
Special gimmicks?
What do those rotting whales do?

Best advice: Go to Spartan Games forum. There's a tab for the Downloads section. The draft rules for the Bone Griffons are in there.

I picked up a Bone Griffons fleet at Historicon last week and I'm starting to paint them up. I haven't played Uncharted Seas at all yet but I've been reading the revised rulebook and various downloads from the Spartan Games site.

I can't tell you how tickled I am by the zombie whales. Zombie whales! They're going to be interesting to play because they're submersible, have no shooting, and cannot capture or be captured. They're purely for ramming and boarding but can also be tethered to the larger ships to add wind-free movement.

I'm looking forward to getting in my first game soon.

I just ran my first game of Uncharted Seas at a gaming camp I run for kids in August. Results HERE:

My overall impressions are very positive. I love naval games, and fantasy naval has had this niche to fill since man o' war died off. Uncharted Seas steps up to the plate nicely.

We did some stuff wrong at first, but a reread of a few elements made it very easy to play (and quite deadly!). We had a great time with CS.

Our group played a game weekend before last and also really liked it. The only (very minor) quibble I have is that I feel there possibly could be a little greater difference between races in some of the ship stats. For example, if you look at the elf and dwarf battleships, they're similar. Obviously speed is the biggest difference, but I feel that the dwarf BB could have a slightly higher Damage rating, along with the higher Critical rating. And also maybe have some differences in broadside gun dice. But I realize this is pretty subjective. All in all, I feel they've had a very good start for the game, and hopefully they'll keep up the good work.
