I've been painting up a bunch of small galleys
that came with the old Conquest of Empire board game.
Going to end up with about 80 ships. Anyone know of any rules that will allow a good game within 3 hours?

The old Ancients game by 3W has galley rules to be played on a hex map. They would be ideal for large amounts of ships and you could probably get done in a couple of hours. No real record keeping involved.

Corvus 2. I've done it with about 25 ships per side but it can definitely handle more. You can find them on freewargamesrules.co.uk

If by 80 ships, you mean 40 models per side, I think the short answer is "no." Sure, in theory you can play with 80 ships, but with every set of rules I've seen, the game would be hopelessly, un-playably slow. If you have that many models, you really need a set of rules that does not require any record sheets for each ships. The MOST you could handle would be very simple counters to put alongside each ship. Any more detail than that (damage points, crew casualties, etc) and it will break down with too many ships.

Hallmark used to hae a set of rules that allowed you to play Lepanto at one to one. I don't recall what it was called though!
It may be worth enquiring to The Last Square as I believe they currently manufacture the Hallmark range.

@IvanDBA, have to say that I have used 60-80 ships on the table at once with Corvus. You *don't* need record sheets for the ships. It is worth having markers to for the ships to indicate whether they are halted, moving backwards, on fire etc. I wrote it so that it did not need record sheets.

I would be extremely disappointed if any game of Corvus took more than about 3 hours, even with a lot of ships.

The main differences between Corvus 2 and the original version are that a points system, some suggested squadron lists and a few more types of ship have been added.

If you want a really nice version of Corvus 2 it is worth buying it from the Society of Ancients for £5.00 GBP or 7 Euros or $10. USD Tony Hughes put an lot of excellent work into making my bare-bones rules more readable. He also did a playsheet, some cardboard ships, markers and turning circle templates that are included. He also added his own suggested squadron lists, historical commentary, bibliography and list of manufacturers.

Sorry to push rules that I wrote, but I do think that they may fit the original query.

I'd agree with Richard that Corvus would work pretty well with larger fleets – particularly if you have multiple players per side.

We have been suggesting these rules to purchasers of our new range of Ancient Ship counters (of which more news very shortly – 2 more fleet packs coming in the next few days).
