My German is not up to it, unfortunately.

Wow, this is even worse than The History Channel…

They've got Queen Luise commanding the army at Jena-Auerstädt…. and the Confederation of the Rhine being created after Tilsit… Stein working for Prussia uninterrupted until the Russian campaign in 1812, when he suddenly appears in Russia… and Queen Luise dying in 1813… (And don't even get me started on the exploding cannonballs and plastic buttons on peoples' shirts, or the 1813 uniforms on the Prussians in 1806….)

This is part of the long-running "Napoleon und die Deutschen" series by Eckhard Kleßmann, whose books are actually quite good. I hope they paid him a handsome royalty for obliterating his work like this!

I think I preferred it before I knew what it was all about!

Why does EVERY film and TV director want exploding cannon balls? Sure it is more 'dramatic', but couldn't just ONE of them go for historical accuracy just for once?

Keraunos03 Jul 2009 4:25 a.m. PST

Peter Weir in Master and Commander, I think he went for solid shot.

So all is not lost.

Gunfreak03 Jul 2009 5:00 a.m. PST

And the alamo has exploding shell from howitzers as well as the greatest canister effects EVER.

The patriot did have a few solid shots in one of the battles(the only thing it got right)
Gettysburg got explosions but again can easly be shell.

Older movies like waterloo tho, got magic cannon balls that go boom

Until the days of CGI, I'll bet that it was near-impossible to film a real cannonball. Whereas every director had dozens of exploding gadgets at his disposal.

(And don't forget the flame-pots. Ever notice how every cheap war movie has bits of firing burning here and there, all in flower-pot sized patches, never spreading, and seemingly on fire for no reason at all?)

Capitain Alatriste had pikemen falling over in sequence to a cannon ball.

it looked like they must have speant ages practising to get the 'all fall down' right, so I wonder whether its just too fiddly for a director on a budget these days.
