I have many images of the various and colorful Prussian commanders dressed in the uniforms of their regiments. Did the Austrians follow this pattern (I'm thinking not)? How did they look different, or did they all wear red facings and gold lace? Are there images online of the various commanders? I was hoping for an easy solution like Nadasty wearing a Hussar uniform of X regiment, but am prepared for bad news. I'm working in 6mm and would like to distinguish the different commanders, so any ideas would appreciated. |

Try a Google search on the names of individual generals like Daun: link and Loudon: link (high quality image of Loudon 3/5ths of the way down the page) and you'll come across some good pictures of them. Be wary of ones that show them in uniforms later than the SYW, though; for the SYW it was usually some variation of white coat, red facings, gold lace in varying quantities, red (and other colour) breeches. The actual regs were for a black tricorne with gold edging and a white coat with red waistcoat and breeches, rank indicated by the amount of lace, of which there was plenty – but this was only introduced in 1751, as up to that point Austrian general officers could wear the uniform of their regiment – or pretty much anything they wanted On campaign, I suspect the "anything they wanted" rule applied |

The Austrians were really tightening up on uniform regulations in the 1750s so I suspect that the regulation generals' uniform would have been worn much of the time by most of the generals – which still leaves some scope for imagination, if you want to use it. ;-) The Wiener Neustadt portraits (many shown in b/w in C Duffy' "By Force of Arms") certainly show vastly wider gold lace than the regulations decreed but on the whole the uniforms seem to be the regulation white and red.
