Strange that nobody posted on this, especially in the light of disturbances/protests by some sections of UK society.

Generally it seems to have had little or no impact on my local community – how about other members?

Personally, I think it smacks of totalitarian regimes (not to mention a political smokescreen to cover poor treatment and bad decision-making), and would rather just see the Royal Tournament re-instated, perhaps as a touring show with just one week at Olympia.

Goober01 Jul 2009 4:36 a.m. PST

The Royal Tournament is kaput? When did that happen?

I think you need to head to the Blue Fez with those opening comments. I have no idea what sections you mean, but I'm sure they'll get upset….

Craig Grady01 Jul 2009 5:17 a.m. PST

The Vets and Cadets Paraded around Wigan, my local town.

Jemima Fawr01 Jul 2009 5:32 a.m. PST

My cadets paraded in Pembroke Dock.

What disturbances/protests were those? I haven't been keeping abreast of the news.

Cerdic01 Jul 2009 6:57 a.m. PST

I had never even heard of it until there was a brief 2 line mention on the radio news on the day.

If that is the governments idea of a good PR stunt then they have been as successful as they have been with everything else!

Supercilius Maximus01 Jul 2009 6:57 a.m. PST

Pro-IRA in Belfast (no real surprises there) and the usual Rangers v Celtic type shouting matches in Glasgow.

There do not appear to have been any protests by a certain type of fundamentalist (whom we are not allowed to more specifically identify) anywhere in the UK – which is interesting. I wonder if moderates are partly responsible for a more….er….responsible approach?

Jemima Fawr01 Jul 2009 7:02 a.m. PST

Cerdic,

It used to be an annual Royal British Legion thing, then it became 'Veteran's Day' a few years back and now 'Armed Forces Day'. It's more an RBL initiative than a government one, but as usual, they've jumped on the RBL's bandwagon.

advocate01 Jul 2009 7:08 a.m. PST

Stirling has had an 'Armed Forces Day" for some years now. My son got a flag and I believe there were parades and displays.

Plynkes01 Jul 2009 7:54 a.m. PST

Strange that nobody posted on this…

You did. Odd way to frame a post. If you want to talk about it, why not just talk about it, rather than commenting that nobody is talking about it?

Cerdic01 Jul 2009 8:21 a.m. PST

Ah, I see. Heard it was the first 'Armed Forces Day'. With no other information at first I wondered what was wrong with Rememberance Sunday all of a sudden!

Armed Forces Day seemed to be billed as more about the current Forces though.

Jemima Fawr01 Jul 2009 9:13 a.m. PST

Yep, that was the idea. It was decided that the 'Veteran's Day' was just pointlessly repeating Armistice Day/Remembrance Sunday.

Wg Cdr Luddite01 Jul 2009 9:37 a.m. PST

People keep referring to the 'Blue Fez'. What is this ?

streetline01 Jul 2009 9:38 a.m. PST

It's another site where more contentious issues are discused so we can concentrate on our toys. Happily we've avoided it this time round.

Griefbringer01 Jul 2009 9:39 a.m. PST

It is another forum run by the esteemed Editor:

thebluefez.com

There one is supposed to be able to talk about such horrifying unnameable things that cannot be spoken loud on the hallowed halls of TMP.

The Armed Forces day in my town consisted of the local council flying the flag. Erm, thats it!

Phil Walling01 Jul 2009 11:03 a.m. PST

I did actually post a news item about Armed Forces Day…

Khazarmac01 Jul 2009 1:06 p.m. PST

First I knew of it was on the morning radio news. Nothing locally that I was aware of.

Who?

Why not?

Do you mean Islamic fundamentalists?

I really do get brassed off with people who believe they have been bullied into silence by the pious pomposities of political correctness.

Mikasa02 Jul 2009 2:24 a.m. PST

How does one get access to the Blue Fez?

It all sounds very clandestine. Do you need a secret handshake to get in? I presume bleeding hearts are not permitted?

Gwydion02 Jul 2009 3:46 a.m. PST

Good question, people keep advising 'head to the Blue Fez' regarding various comments, but if it is invitation only that is somewhat difficult.

Supercilius Maximus02 Jul 2009 4:11 a.m. PST

<<You did. Odd way to frame a post. If you want to talk about it, why not just talk about it, rather than commenting that nobody is talking about it?>>

I was away at the weekend, and was surprised that nobody had posted anything about it in advance, or on the day. Just seemed odd, particularly as many people on the British Boards are very supportive of Armed Forces events.

<<I really do get brassed off with people who believe they have been bullied into silence by the pious pomposities of political correctness.>>

A tongue-in-cheek dig at the BBC, who try not to refer to Islamic Fundamentalists as….well….Islamic. Nice to see a member of the Labour Party speaking out against political correctness!

{Apologies to Phil W for not noticing his News post.}

Jeremy Sutcliffe02 Jul 2009 8:12 a.m. PST

Sup Max allow me a brief off thread trot on my hobby horse.

As a Labour party Member and as a (former) Oldham Councillor I have always taken a stand against the excesses of PC, a creation of well meaning, naive, middle class, small "L" liberals who cannot see the damage that PC does when oredinary people convince themselves that there are things that can't be talked about. There is nothing, but nothing, that can't be talked about, it just has to be done in moderate language.

Back on thread.

I don't like the armed forces day flag (Top half of a Union Flag with "Armed Forces Day" underneath). I don't like words on something "heraldic". I'm sure a better design could have been found.

Supercilius Maximus02 Jul 2009 10:25 a.m. PST

Jeremy,

You've never struck me as a member of the "chattering class" wing of the party (and I mean that as a compliment).

I agree on the flag – looks like a complimentary carrier bag design.

General Jumbo02 Jul 2009 6:04 p.m. PST

A pathetic attempt at a "flag" …… somehow in keeping with the dying embers of a government that never dealt honourably with the armed forces anyway ……. I'll get me coat

archstanton7302 Jul 2009 6:28 p.m. PST

I don't think much happenned here in sleepy Taunton although there was one bloke who put the flag out on his house…Shame really as we are a garrison town..

Cerdic03 Jul 2009 4:16 a.m. PST

They had a special flag! I didn't see any of those.
