Just taken snaps of these Rebs. I'm very proud of the work. It wasn't quick with all the variety I've put into uniforms! link As you can see, I got a bit carried away taking pictures. Any screw ups that you can spot? I'm going to kick off basing these now. I can fix any problems "on the fly" Cheers Neil reinforcementsbypost.com (painting service) games2trains.com (auction site) |

<shameless plug> The only bad thing I see is that you didnt use chinstrapminiatures.com as your source for the minis. </shameless plug> =P |

Nice minis. At 28mm they will mix with most other ranges. |

None that I can see! Nicely done. |

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best possible paint job, I would have to give them a 10. |

It is very doubtful that Rebs would have used "captured" Union Forage Caps. Also, the chevrons should be a darker blue, more like in the ultramarine blue hue or a bit darker. I've also seen black Reb chevrons. That might be a bit too rare to use a lot though. Other than these details looks very good. Keep going. |

That is interesting. I have plates with black chevrons but thought it was a printing problem. I have a few captured forage caps in this group of figures (I think 3 out of 40.) Lets see what the consensus is. I'm happy to change them. |

I think they look great. Maybe its just not showing up in the pictures because of the lighting, but I would paint the hat bands on the hats. It provides a nice contrast. |

I need to take the time to paint mine like that. Thanks for giving me a mark to shoot for. |

Cleburne1863 – please tell me about the hat bands. I didn't know about those. Thanks for the tip. |

Really nice! You might add more black leathers and some tin drum canteens. I read that Jackson's troops were wearing a number of Union forage caps that they grabbed at Harper's Ferry before Antietam. I can't source it, sorry. |

This style of painting usually looks cruder and rougher in up close photos and then becomes a very nice effect at distance in mass. Yours, however, have a very nice look individually up close too. Very good work indeed. Now send us some really nice Unit photos on good wargame terrain, Please sir can we have some more? |

I'm basing up these lads and a Union unit. I have a nice set up for taking photos and I just finished a building for background. Next step is to make a surround for the light box so I can have a backdrop. It should all come together within a week. |

Just wanted to say all of my painted 28mm ACW figures are museum quality too. |

Most if not all hats in that day came with hat bands. Of course crudely made hats might not have them but 'regular' hat-makers supplied them as a matter of course. It just finished the hat. I have seen many many black hat bands. There were probably other colors though (not whacky colors though). Since most men's civilian hats were with shades of gray, shades of brown and black, a black hat band would probably be appropriate for any of these. Good catch by Cleburne. I missed that one. Lord Bottle offered the bit about black leather goods. That's true. The Rebs usually 'acquired' their leather goods from Union soldiers and the US Government issued theirs in black. Some CS contractors produced only tanned leather (reddish-brown) so you could go either way and/or mix the colors within the same unit. This adds another level of painting for you to break up the boredom of painting all the models the same colors. Also Lord Bottle mentions the tin canteens. Good point! The Rebs used all styles of canteens so have some fun there. |

Neil: Great work, as always Sky-blue chevrons – although the regulation colour – were not as common as either dark grey or black chevrons (Chortle – not a printing problem – it turns out it is a lot easier to colour cloth black than light blue) -that being said, I would game with them in a minute! |

Thanks for the tips on chevrons, leather, the tin canteen, and the forage caps (which I will cut down to one per unit) |

Yes, as Avidgamer says, mostly black or dark grey, and some brown. On my figures, if I paint the hat a lighter color like light grey, tan, or brown I paint the hat band dark for contrast. If the hat is black or dark grey, I paint the band dark or light brown. The Time-Life Echos of Glory series has good pictures of period hats and their bands. |

A few changes, I've done 80% of hat bands dark and 20% in greys and browns. My hats are largely light coloured on the Rebs so this works out OK. I did a couple of canteens in silver to simulate metal. I dropped some of the blue caps (down from 3 to 1). I'm changing most of the chevrons over to darker colours. |

With ACW uniforms and equipment there is a wide scope of "the possible" but the huge percentage of colors and styles is the "likely" that many have suggested here! A touch of variety here and there for both USA and CSA is both accurate and more fun to paint! |

Okay they were amateurish old Minifig 15's badly painted to a museum quality like the Sung dynasty museum. I let them go for a bag of 200 25s and I miss them to this day. |
