Just was watching She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and my sister noticed one of the Buffalo had white splotches on its legs. Would a buffalo really have colors like that or did the film crew substitute a cow?

Hmm, the ones I've seen have nothing like that. They were all a medium to dark brown.

ALV, it's been a while since I've seen the film, but I must say that your sister has a good pair of eyes to spot that! I don't know about or heard of buffaloes having any distinguishing marks, such as contrasting spots. Of course, there are probably some exceptions, so I'm sure you could include a couple in your miniature herds and no one would take issue with it. In the meantime, check out these pics of Plains buffalo, to inspire you:

Good luck with your project, ALV! thumbs up

Colour them pink if you want since N. American buffalo are fantasy creatures. As every pedant knows they are actually bison!!!

I have never seen one, and I've seen a fair number in real life (including just down the road from me -- until they got rustled, that is).

Probably a cow in bison's clothing.

T'is true.

And they taste very, very nice.

As a comment to the observation by Gallowglass:
Those attending Historicon-try the buffalo burger at Fuddruckers.

Noticed that as well. Not sure of the answer though.

Bison can interbreed with cattle. I presume the herd in question had such an animal in it.

I've seen a lot of bison, and I've never seen one with white legs.

And yes, tasty in burger or steak form. Better than cow beef.

M C MonkeyDew01 Jul 2009 8:46 a.m. PST

Note also the bison in question was a calf IIRC.

Hexxenhammer01 Jul 2009 8:59 a.m. PST

Note: If anyone ever says, "Those are bison, not buffalo." You have my permission to kick them in the balls.

coryfromMissoula01 Jul 2009 9:20 a.m. PST

They do love rolling in the mud and dust and that can make a bison appear as if it has markings.

I am with Hexxenhammer – I have seen lots of bison (buffalo, whatever) and none of them were anything but brown

Good eating, though

Gallowglass01 Jul 2009 1:01 p.m. PST

I'll be paying a trip to a farm that breeds them in the relatively near future.

I'll get as close as I can take pictures, and I'll try to ask the breeders about the markings if I get a chance.

Going east of Denver Sunday and, weather and proximity permitting, I'll take some pictures of a local herd. Wish I'd had my camera last trip as they were grazing right at the highway's edge.

How very true! And they are lean too!

Mr Brightside01 Jul 2009 4:57 p.m. PST

Thanks, no painting project planned as yet though. Just curious. Interesting about cattle/bison hybrids.

I have never seen one that was anything other than varying shades of brown. And I agree with GG and Hex that it is lean and tasty meat. Low in cholesterol too.

Here's a photo of a white calf that appears to have brownish bits to it:

White buffalo are rare but very real : )

Mr Brightside05 Jul 2009 3:02 p.m. PST

Yes saw that on the news thanks.

The one in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon was probably a cow in buffalo clothing.

I am putting together a herd. I'm mixing a number of toys with various figures from different manufacturers. I have about 15 or 16 so far. plan to get about 30. Then I want to run a buffalo hunt game with LOTOW plains indian bands. And I paint mine brown on brown, darker brown on the longer shaggy hair.
