I'm considering these guys for that setting, if I use them in 15mm games:

Any other cool suggestions out there?

Thanks.

I just think that the Pendraken ones look pretty close to these:

Don't know what happened to that link, but here's another one that shows those trolls (middle of the page):

Those trolls look pretty righteously nasty and Morlock-y to me…

I should be getting them mid to late week and will let you guys know how they look, and how compare to other figs.

Those trolls may need to get the zombie treatment for my 15mm games. They would make really cool zombie monstrosity as shown in some video game franchises.

Pendraken, huh? Wonder who will be carrying htem at H-con? I really gotta print out the listing tomorrow when I go into the office.

Cacique Caribe30 Jun 2009 1:11 a.m. PST

I might paint them as in the 1960 film:

Or a less cartoony color scheme, such as what Jeremy Irons looks like in the 2002 film (shows up 3 minutes into clip):

What do you guys think?

Let's see what ancient civilians could be used as Eloi:

TMP link

CC

Cacique Caribe06 Jul 2009 7:07 a.m. PST

1) I like that idea of having a group of time travellers instead of just one.

2) Should some of the Eloi get in the action as well? Maybe with improvised weapons?

Unlike the 1960 film, where George does it all . . .

Here George convinces his colleagues and even Mrs. Watchett (six in all – though I'm open to the idea of more) to accompany him on his fantastic journey through time. When they reach October 12th, 802,701AD, they stop the machine and investigate.

FIGURES NEEDED

Main Victorians:
George – Time Traveler
Filby – George's best friend
Dr. Hillyer
Anthony Bridewell
Walter Kemp
Mrs. Watchett

Eloi:
Weena
8-10 Eloi males
6 other Eloi females

Morlocks:
15-20 Morlock warriors
1-2 Morlock leaders
See mid-page here: link

I think I'll be ok with the "Morlocks" I ordered from Pendraken (his "Trolls"), but I hope I can get enough Victorian figures from among the OG Boer Wars and Boxer Rebellion packs that are in transit. As for Eloi, I am still unsure which way to go.

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS

Scenario I:
After befriending Weena, and the first hypnotic "harvesting" of the Eloi by the Morlocks (which takes Weena and the other Eloi into the Sphinx), George and his companions try to find an entrance. When they discover the Eloi about to be slaughtered, George and his companions (some with small firearms, others with torches to blind the Morlocks), fight the Morlocks and embark on a return topside through the Morlock underground.

If they are successful in the rescue, the Victorians must try to set fire to the fuel running the underground pumps. If Weena is not rescued, George's morale and skills will be severely compromised.

Mrs. Watchett is the slowest one of the group, so all have to reduce their movement to accommodate her frailty. She will not be left behind (it's not the Victorian way, after all).

Victory conditions: All Victorians and Weena are safely returned to the surface.

Scenario II:
After reaching the surface, they discover that the time machine has disappeared into the Morlock structure. They must re-enter the Morlock underground. If they are fortunate enough in their search, they find the time machine. However, it is damaged and can only make a single very short trip into the past. They must move the machine outside the gates, if they are to make this escape successful, while fighting off a band of Morlocks. This may be just what they need to avoid (recover) any losses during this second scenario.

Victory conditions: The time machine must be found within a few turns, in order for them to make the trip back to before the taking of the contraption. Don't even ask about the temporal implications of going back before you have left! :)

TERRAIN

Also, after this recent terrain project, I now see a lot of potential for using cork in a variety of other ways, including tunnels and caves:

link

The tunnels/caves could be done 3-4 tiles high, instead of the tall hills I created a couple of weeks ago. After a couple of coats of PVA the crumbly cork tiles are no longer crumbly. Instead, they seem very resilient.

SLOW DEVELOPMENT OF CONCEPT

As you can tell from this previous thread (see link below), I've been in the planning stages of this idea since late 2006. I had all my 28mm figures for it, but now I think I will try it in 15mm:

TMP link

So, what do you guys think of all this? Have I gone mad????

Just got my Pendraken Trolls (my "Morlocks") today at the hotel. I don't have a camera with me, so I'll try to give a written breakdown of the 6 variants I got . . .

But, first of all, please note that the product codes in the pictures on the website need some correction. The one with the club (right) is labeled as FT3, but it is really part of the FT1 pack (middle of this page):

link

FT1 Troll with Club – Mixed poses (5) £1.35 GBP
There are actually 3 different poses in the pack.
* Long hair variant advancing with club on left hand (the so-called FT3 image on the website), wearing "loincloth"
* Bald variant advancing with club on left hand, wearing "loincloth"
* Bald variant standing with club on right hand, wearing "loincloth"

FT2 Troll with boulder – Mixed poses (5) £1.35 GBP
There are 2 different poses in the pack.
* Long hair variant advancing with boulder overhead (the image labeled as FT2 on the website), wearing "loincloth"
* Long hair variant standing with boulder overhead, wearing "loincloth"

FT3 Troll Leader (1) £0.24 GBP
There's only one pose in the pack.
* Bald figure, standing holding a cleaver overhead with right hand. His "loincloth" is sculpted as if it was made of mail instead of fabric. He also wears a fur vest of sorts, with some metal circles sown onto the surface

All in all, there are 6 poses. The figures are a bit taller than the Rebel Minis figures I had with me in the room, but that may be due to the thickness of their integral bases. They are very ape-like in physique, with short legs, long arms, broad backs and shoulders, forward-placed heads.

First chance I get, I will take pictures and post on my Flickr account for all to see:

link

I really like the figures. I wanted something that could look like an ape-human hybrid, or a de-evolved human, and I think I found the perfect figures. My only wish is that they had more poses available.

Hope this helps.

PS. Though there are only 6 variants, I will try to increase that a bit by adding hair (with GreenStuff) to some of the ones that are bald. Furthermore, I may try to play a bit with their clothing, such as adding putty over some of the shoulders.

They almost remind me of this Frazetta picture:

So . . . what do you guys think of all this? Do you think it a worthwhile effort to be pursued?

Sorry, I have not responded in awhile CC. I will say that your ideas look very cool, if also a wee bit . . . ambitious.

I like the ideas of multiple time travelers, the inclusion of Mrs. Watchett is a particulary humorous touch. You could use an early WW1 British Officer for Philby. I would almost rather the original story stay the same, and have George and Co. return to the future, and that be the point of divergence, instead of all of them being with him from the very beginning.

I really like those troll/morlocks as well.

In regards to the actual nitty gritty details, such as the production of terrain, I can't be of much help. I'm fairly new to all this. The pictures look pretty nice though.

"I would almost rather the original story stay the same, and have George and Co. return to the future, and that be the point of divergence, instead of all of them being with him from the very beginning."

I like that! That way they could be somewhat prepared for what they will encounter.

Thanks.

The Grimlock in D&D are a direct" borrowing" of the Time Machine Morlocks. Just like their Dackons are a direct borrowing of the ERB White Apes of Mars, etc, etc.

I guess they could do double duty and work as really big Oparian males too, right?

I almost wonder if my chimpmunks might be ok as make-do models -- they are subterranean dwellers who are a combination of ape and rodent. Perhaps not, but in a pinch?

Hmm. Interesting critters those Chimpmonks. II wonder how tall they are.
