I received a package of new 1:3000 scale ships from North Head Miniatures in NZ yesterday. I will put up a report on them as soon as I can. But as always nice crisp castings and very detailed models. The Doxford class freighter is very nice indeed and it was a delight to see a World War One Flower class sloop in the package, along with the WW2 long forecastle type.

The guys have had a lot of personal problems in the past year and that has made things very difficult for them. But when they can shake things off and settle down again their models are well worth purchasing.

Are these actually in production then? They announced the line last year but they still haven't shown up on the North head website.

The guys are getting themselves sorted out. I understand it will take more than 4 weeks yet.

I cant say about them being in production. I think they were, but are probably now suspended. One of the guys is moving to a new town and the other is still recovering from the sudden loss of his wife in a road accident.

Wow. . . that's gotta suck.

Just a matter of detail from a pedant, what is a "Doxford class freighter"?

Mal Wright Fezian03 Jul 2009 6:05 a.m. PST

They were a class of merchant ships built in the UK prior to WW2. There is information about them and other standarised merchant ship designs on the www.

Doxford's certainly built a standardised design of general cargo ship, "The Doxford Economy Ship" as well as possibly the most numerous marine diesel engine, known simply as a Doxford. I'd never heard them called a "Doxford Class" though, and I assume that that is what they are referring to.

Sigh!
