I thought you might be interested in this game:

The Battle of Romani, 1916,

where nothing much except the intrepid Aussie Light Horse Brigades stand between the Turks and victory at Suez in WW1.

It was put on at our club show warlords.co.uk/mainframe.htm by visitors from 'The Woodbine Design Company' using 28mm Gripping Beast figures. Hope you like it :)

Nice layout. It does draw attention to the fact that nobody makes 28mm dismounted Light Horse in their correct kit, except those chaps in Qld. Unfortunately they are tiny and don't match anyone elses Turks etc.

Theword21 Jun 2009 3:28 p.m. PST

Mate that looks absolutely fantastic.

Just looking at that I have decided to buy some NZ Mounted Riflemen in 28mm… I'm not sure who actually makes them though…

Again, fantastic.

I like trenches being BELOW the level of the terrain--nice boards!

If by those chaps in QLD you mean:

WarTimeMiniatures.com.au

They are arguably the most definitive Light Horse figures available. Also very good anatomically.

Have you had them in your hand to compare size?

The Jim Jones Cocktail Hour21 Jun 2009 3:36 p.m. PST

I have had them in hand as it happens, I was shown a selection and they looked definitely wee against Brigade Games, Copplestone etc. Gorgeous sculpts but about the only other maker I could see that they would match size wise was Eureka.

Gorgeous sculpts, really nice work, just the wrong size for me.

Hi Doug,

At Blaze Away we make dismounted and mounted Light horse for Europe and Palestine in 28mm and we are based in Darwin;

cheers
Jon.

Thanks Jon,

Those are the old Dominion range are they not? Not wishing to sound rude I'll just say the sculpting style and their anatomy isn't my cup of tea.

I'm a picky beggar I suppose. What I want is a range that not only gets the equipment right but bears at least some slight resemblance to the proportions of the human form and also fits with the existing ranges of toys in my possession.

Oh well, dream on.

korsun0 Supporting Member of TMP21 Jun 2009 11:07 p.m. PST

Nothing wrong with being picky. They are indeed the old Dominion range, and no need to apologise old chap as honest criticism and feedback is all part of the game so I thankyou for it!

As you seem to be quite objective in your appraisal of figures, could I ask you to have a look at the Arabs on our site and tell me what you think of them? We had these sculpted from scratch and all the feedback we have had so far has been good but its always good to get honest opinion?

cheers
Jon.

Ah thanks for reminding me Jon. I had seen those before, someone linked to them on the LAF forum. Very nice, they look quite a bit like Alan Marsh's work and the sculpting style isn't that different from the Battlescape ALH. What are they like for height and girth. I've been thinking of buying some of the Artizan Arabs, wondering if these match?

korsun0 Supporting Member of TMP22 Jun 2009 2:09 a.m. PST

They were sculpted by Ian Mountain; hard to say how they go with Artizan? We are adding a few extra posses soon as well Can you drop me an email at;

cheers
Jon.

MathewatWarTimeMiniatures22 Jun 2009 2:38 a.m. PST

Same sculptor as the ALH. :)

Theword22 Jun 2009 3:02 a.m. PST

So… no-one does NZMR Troopers?

nsolomon9922 Jun 2009 3:53 a.m. PST

Cacadores, looks good, has good "Desert Campaign" feel. My grandfather was a Light Horseman. Minor note, the Australians fought under the Union Jack at this stage of the war. Thankyou for mounting an Australian flag in the camp but you dont need to for the Battle of Romani.

"Same sculptor as the ALH"

Well there you go! He is a very talented sculptor isn't he….:)

The Jim Jones Cocktail Hour22 Jun 2009 5:18 p.m. PST

He is indeed.

Doug, re my earlier, if you want to drop me an email I can send you out a couple of figures to have a look at and you can see how they go with Artizan.

Thanks
Jon.

Oooohhh how I hate all that crap about size!

Has anyone ever walked down a street and noticed that people are NOT all the same size???

I happily mix all kinds of brands together for the reason that everyone looking ALIKE is completely and utterly wrong.

Look at Soldiers on parade. They are not the same size either. Besides when on the tabletop you cant really tell and who the heck is going to run around with a tape measure checking them out?

There is far too much fuss about differences in figures from one brand to another.

Mal Wright Fezian23 Jun 2009 2:00 a.m. PST

BTW my group wargamed the Palestine campaign a good 20 years ago. It was a very interesting one to wargame and we enjoyed some excellent games.

I agree that having the trenches actually in the scenery instead of on it, looks much better. It improves what is already an excellent terrain layout.

"Oooohhh how I hate all that crap about size!"

Well horses for courses. I very much doubt you line up 15mm armies against 25mm on the same table. I gather you like naval gaming. Do you fight fleets of 1/1200 scale ships against 1/2400. Do you mix ships of the same class next to each other in say 1/200 and 1/250.And more to the point would you if there was a similarly attractive model in the same scale? More power to you if you do. Not everyone has the same aesthetic.

"Look at Soldiers on parade"

Actually I've had plenty of opportunities to do that from within the ranks, if it comes to it. Naturally there are variations in the size of individuals. If you know a little about ceremonial parades you'd realise there's some effort that goes into disguising that fact but that's probably beside the point.

What I've not seen is the members of battalion 'A' being all a uniform 6' and battalion B made up of individuals of a uniform 5'6", unless maybe we are talking about the Grenadier Guards next to the Gurkhas. And are the rifles of the two battalions significantly different in size? That's what happens with the makers of toy soldiers, they tend to make a uniform size for a given range, or figure type. So for example all of maker X's ALH are 26 mm sole to eye and maker Y's figures 32mm. Looks a little odd?

Look I'm not adverse to mix and match, there are even size within manafacturers ranges. Brigade has some pretty wildly varying figure sizes across its ranges. Most manufacturers do. On the whole you just make do and fix up the problem with basing. I've got a fair selection. There's a line you are going to draw at some point and judging by the effort most companies go to on this point it seems to be a common view.

I wish War Time Miniatures well. They are to be congratulated on an accurate and really nicely sculpted and cast set of minis. I'm just a little disappointed that they don't seem to fit well with existing ranges. Given that ALH is always likely to be a fairly marginal subject and something of a niche, I'm a little surprised they didn't attempt to size them to fit more or less with what is already out there. That's their decision, not mine to question. Maybe they will release a comprehensive range of WW1 Middle East figures, be flooded with orders and become the manufacturer of choice.

As I said horses for courses.

Theword23 Jun 2009 6:12 p.m. PST

Of course.. the real point is….

Who makes NZMR in this scale..

When we know this then we can all move on = )
