I am working on a German WWI army for the 1914-15 period, and one of my references is the Osprey book "The German Army in World War I, 1914-15 (1)" MAA 394. This book lists 13 regular regiments and 1 reserve regiment of Light Horse. I am not familiar with these guys. Can anyone direct me to a source or provide any info about them? Would they be lance armed or just saber and carbine? How would they differ in their role from say Hussars or Uhlans? The Osprey book gives a good depiction of the uniform, so now I am just trying to find out more about them. Thanks, Terry |

All German cavalry were the same in function and all were armed with lance, carbine and saber. |

The regiments being referred to were the Jaeger zu Pferde regiments. Originally they were dispatch riders formed into detachments, then squadrons, finally regiments. The first 3 regiments were formed in 1905. In 1910 there were six. By 1913 there were 13 regiments. All were Prussian. As with other cavalry regiments, other ranks were issued lances. The pennon was white over black for troopers and all white with a black Prussian eagle for corporals. If you need the regimental piping colors I can supply them. |

Thanks Terry37 for posting this. I was wondering myself as I plan to do a small unit of cavalry for the Freikorps 1918-1920. rdg1125, if you have the piping colours that would be very useful. Thanks! |

Thanks all for the help here. I will just have to work these guys up. RDG, yes, please if you have the piping colors for them that would be great! I am assuming it went down the front of the jacket, the false tunrbacks in the rear and on the shoulder straps? Osprey says the first six regiments wore Cuirassier helmets, and the last six wore a Dragoon helmet. Of course with the field cover they would probably look pretty much the same, and especially in 15 MM. Thanks again, Terry |
