I just completed a Westland Whirlwind from Don Schemenk models. Paints are basic acrylics, panel lines are done by 0.5mm mechanical pencil and decals from True North Miniatures.

Props were replaced with epoxy putty ones as I could not clean up the supplied ones to my satisfaction. Mounting system is a 1/16" ID aluminum tube embedded in the underside of the fuselage with epoxy and ground flush with the fuselage. 20mm cannon are made from 0.020 brass wire.

Paint scheme is standard green/brown with a sky underside. Fuselage band and prop spinners should be white, but my white paint is a little chalky so I used a light gray instead. Tail fin flash probably should have been cut down by 1/3 as they look a little over-sized compared to the reference pictures. Pattern is from the 263 Squadron in mid-late 1941.

Very nice always been a great fan of the Whirlwind. First encountered it in an old Commando mag when I was about 8.

Nicely done. Certainly more authentic than the 1/72 model my father painted up 50 years ago: picture

Oh that is a trouser-bulging sexy model.

Time for a cold shower……

Yep, very nice. Did the mini require lots of hole patching? I picked up some from Air Alex that require lots of putty & filler.

This one is from Don Schmenk and it was cast as a single unit, not separate wing and fuselage as some of his other models. There were 3-4 small air bubbles that needed to be filled, but they were small enough that I simply used 5-minute epoxy – mixed and waited about 3-4 minutes until it forms a thick, honey like goo and then filled the holes with that. The advantage of using liquid expoxy is that it settles flat and thus requires very little sanding afterward.

There appear to be certain parts of the aircraft that are susceptible to air bubbles as two of the other Whirlwind kits that I have from Don also have bubbles in the same locations. It may have to do with the fact that the plane was cast as a single piece, rather than as separate wing and fuselage.

Looking Good, Binhan.

Not really. I just got them because they were available. Although I suppose now I'll have to go find a scenario for them.
