Hi Guys – Just wanted to know -

Are you primarily – WWI? WWII? Korean War? Viet Nam? Middle East? Modern Jets? (any other gaming period?)

And are you primarily – 1/600, 1/300, 1/144, 1/72 (any other gaming scale I've left out?)

I have: WWI – 1/72s and a dozen Wings of War 1/144s.
WWII – a few 1/72s but mostly 1/144s.
Korea, Viet Nam & Modern Jets are all 1/144.

Sorry for all the cross-posting but I wanted to get everyone's input.

Thanks,

Kimball

I just played a WWII Flying Tigers game in 1/144, using Check your 6.

I was gaming in 1/72 for the Great War, but all my models are slowly falling apart.

Chips8816 Jun 2009 2:37 p.m. PST

Hi John -

Yep, I know what you mean. I was using 1/72 until they started coming out with the 21C pre-paints and that got me into 1/144s.

WWI in 1/144 using Wings Of War occasionally, and Duel Of Aces (from Tumbling Dice) more often.

WWII in 1/600 using Bag The Hun or Luftwaffe 1946 depending on the theatre and period. I keep fighting the temptation to build winter war air forces in 1/300 though; can't shake the feeling that if I ever actually find a spare day or two I'll go to town with LeLv 24 markings for the Raiden Buffalo, and then start painting I16s and Speedy Bombers….

Post-war in 1/600 using Air War C21 in the main, but Thud Ridge for Vietnam. Don't play much 50s stuff at the moment, but have dabbled with a tinkered L46 for Korea, which seemed to work pretty well.

For all periods I favour large scale engagements – less than a squadron on the table seems a waste, and more is usually better for WW2 in particular, so my rule and model preferences tend to reflect that. Tumbling Dice dominates my collection, with oddments from other 1/600 firms, and mainly Wings Of War for the 1/144 WWI, although I'm building my first few Reviresco kits to go with them. (Thanks Dennis!)

Everything at 1/600 except WW1, which I do not own any of (though I've played in 1/144 and 1/72). I concentrate in WW2 and Viet Nam.

WWI Wings of War with the minis, and WWI in 1/300; WWII in 1/300. Looking to get into moderns in 1/300 but need to look at the rules – I won't buy any sight unseen anymore…too many bad rules sets (or at least not what I think makes a good rules set).

Years ago I started doing Early-WW2 Pacific using 1/300 but it got pushed into the background. Recently I found Bag the Hun which seems to be able to handle quite a few planes. At the same time I found 1/600 and went a little crazy, buying 18 of every Jap type and 12 of every Allied plane, plus lots and lots of bombers for the same period. A fighter needs targets, right?

Right about the time I was painting the last of them Dom came out of the sun and blasted holes in my plan by pointing out that BTH doesn't handle the theater very well and I'd need to make adjustments or find new rules. That's where I'm at for the moment. Hopefully BTH2 will be out soon and will solve the problem…

Why are you asking this ?

Daniel; I'm not sure that I'm quite the world-renowned rules expert you make out – give it a try and draw your own conclusions mate – horses for courses and all that….

Wingco; wow, and I thought *I* was a gratuitously grouchy Bleeped texter….

Daniel16 Jun 2009 3:54 p.m. PST

No worries, Dom – really. You got to it before I did and kindly pointed out what you thought. I looked at it and came to the same conclusion – no target plane can avoid the dice 6 .50 cals or 12 .303's can generate. As far as I'm concerned you saved me some trouble finding it out on my own.

1/600 to 1/100 (primarily 1/144 and 1/100 though). Spanish Civil War through the Falklands. And, I'm buying WWI stuff because I can't seem to focus.

Have some ww2 stuff but all for tabletop aircraft for rapid fire.

gweirda16 Jun 2009 7:20 p.m. PST

1/300 WW1 --will probably go 1/600 for WW2.

As much as I love nice looking models, the genre's arena is airspace which means the more area you have the better, and smaller models = smaller bases = more gaming area for any given amount of space.

The attractiveness of the tabletop gaming action (as opposed to that of the individual models) is also much greater, imo, with more space between the models.

Air-air is mainly WW2 1/300th, plus some moderns 1/600th.

My ground pounders (WW1 onwards) have lots of air support in various scales, but mainly 1/300th, 1/144th and 1/100th, but they don't foten fight each other.

So tempted to chuck in the 1/300th and switch to 1/600th Tumbling Dice et al for cost and space saving reasons- oh and you can fit more planes on the table……

Old Slow Trot17 Jun 2009 6:44 a.m. PST

WW1 1/72,WW2 1/144. Haven't tried the jet age games yet.

Warbeads17 Jun 2009 7:04 a.m. PST

Solely 1/600th – sold everything else off.

It flies, it's worthy…all genres/ all eras.

That said I have had most games in 1950 to "tomorrow" – Love missiles on the table.

Wings At War and Air War C21 have been my rules of choice to own, will play most anything if someone has it set up.

Prefer 2D for speed of play and large formations over 3D.

My Preferences, YMMV.

Gracias,

Glenn

Wg Cdr Luddite,

Besides your lack of grace and manners I suspect you may be challenged by the word "everyone" which may be found ina tool called a dictionary. Try that.

Garcias,

Glenn

who is home on Sick Leave and has even less patience for fools today.

Warbeads17 Jun 2009 7:41 a.m. PST

Oh, "Garcias" is intentional BTW.

While it started out as a semi-consistent typo, I have begun to use it when people make totally unhelpful replies or I think it something is a hindering another war gamer's efforts to expand his/her enjoyment of the hobby. Just a schizophrenic aside to myself about useless answers we all provide on certain subjects at certain times.

It comes from the "message to Garcia" idea (actually "Travis dispatched a hastily scribbled missive to Gonzales" asking for aid but I keep mis-remembering it as Garcia) preceding/during the battle of the Alamo that returned no reinforcements/aid. Too often we at TMP post replies that do nothing to answer the querstion or provide helpful information.

Gracias,

Glenn

Back on topic: WW II in 1/600 and 1/300.

I've even still got a bunch of the old 1/432 "Air Power" planes made by Heritage (I think) in the late 70's/ early 80's (and if anybody has any of these and doesn't want them, drop me a PM).

Currently using CY 6! for rules.

Wg Cdr Luddite17 Jun 2009 10:17 a.m. PST

I'm still waiting for an answer.

My reason for asking is to find out what chips88 really wants, because I might be able to help. Like Dom I am happy to pass on words of wisdom to sprogs.

I apologise for my lack of tact, I was ratarsed when I did it.

I'm sober now and still don't understand Warbeads gibbering in
some foreign language.

RockyRusso17 Jun 2009 11:39 a.m. PST

Hi

Using the Triplane/Canvas Falcons/Mustangs and Messerschmitts/ Mig Alley/ Mig killers system, I prefer to drop a die 20 and play the mission generated.

WW1 is 1-6, Spanish Civil War is 7, China in the 30s is 8, 9-16 is WW2, 17 is Korea, 18 is Arab Israeli 50s, 19 is modern middle east, 20 is 'nam.

All aircraft are 1/72 and, yes, I have a LOT of models.

Rocky

Lion in the Stars17 Jun 2009 1:51 p.m. PST

1/300 for anything up to 1960, 1/600 for anything 1960 and later.

Blue Sky series for props, haven't started later gaming yet. still looking for rules that I like.

[edit] forgot the 1/100 or 1/144 aircraft for my Flames of War air support, but they don't really count.

Timmo uk18 Jun 2009 3:56 a.m. PST

WW1 – 1/144 only Wings of War – with significant repaints. I sold my metal ones years ago when I tired of the period (wished I hadn't now) but I no longer have the will power to sit and make up metal kits. I've tried 1/72 but again making kits and space issues… Will add more planes when the UK price comes down (let's hope one day). Rules Algy.

WW2 BofB 1/285 Raiden. Rules BTH. Waiting for BTH2. Would like Raiden to add the Stuka and Do to their range.

Considering WW2 pacific theatre in 1/285. Dom any chance of some suitable national decals for Seafires or some Hellcat tail markings?

This is really useful stuff. I'm wanting to branch out from my usual WW1 1/144 into WW2 or 50's aircraft but wondered about which scale to go for.

I didn't realise on TMP you needed to quote a reason for posting a question. I will have to bear that in mind. Or go elsewhere!

Top Gun Ace20 Jun 2009 9:53 a.m. PST

WWI – 1/72 and 1/144 (have some 1/300th planes to, but they aren't painted, or assembled)

WWII – 1/100, 1/144, 1/300, and 1/600

Modern – 1/300, and 1/600 (have some 1/100 and 1/144, but haven't used them yet – they do look very nice though)
