Hopefully over the next several months Myself and son Roderick will be getting some masters cast of the Galactic ships. I have a ship going to IWM this week to get ran through the wringer to see if how we are doing our sculpts will survive the mold master process long enough to make casting masters. So on that hopefull note, I am splitting out a previous thread to separate the different factions ships and ground units out. First, we start with the United Worlds Protectorate. The UPW is loosely based on historical colonial America with a flavoring of the Aliens universe. With that in mind, I had Roderick start some ship sculpts in a Sulacoo-ish design. First up is the Olympia Class Destroyer. Do not have all the specs ran out yet, but for all UPW ships, the prime weapon mount is based on the UNSC Graser. Secondaries are based on the standard scattergun and the missile system is re-configurable sub-munition missile. Also, a modular approach was followed in the design style and except for the Escort Carrier and Battleship, the flight decks are on the left-hand side picture picture Constellation Class Battle-Cruiser picture picture picture Constitution Class Heavy Battleship picture picture picture Province Class Escort Carrier The Province is based on the Olympia, with the additional hanger deck added to the right side. The design is also up-engined. picture picture Accord Class Transport picture
Allegiance Class Tanker picture Emblem For the United Worlds Protectorate picture ------------------------------------------ For the Ala-Skan Commonwealth I had started and started again with wedge-ish designs. Many years ago they were backwards(big end forwards) casket shape designs. Then split wedges until that went away. Trying to stay with the wedge layout but now with a ribbed armor look. With the latest revamp, all I have of the AC line is the Audacious SuperDreadnaught. As I noted in the UPW thread, I have a ship heading to IWM for mold testing to see how the build process we use will hold up to vulcanization process
fingers crossed that I get a decent mold anyway. I should have the 3 other designs done tonight or tomorrow and will get those posted. Audacious Super-Dreadnaught picture picture Ala-Skan Commonwealth emblem

I like the ships. Have you posted before about this game? I tried a search and found no earlier post from which this is an "update" as it says in your title. |

Some of those designs fall into the "very cool" column. I am curious though, what're the dishes on the bows of all the UWP ships? Tim |

@ Allen57 – Sorry about that, I hadnt posted this before
here @ TimHerr – Those are the primary weapon mounts. Based on the FT UNSC Grasers
..Updates
.. Nippon Hegemony My Japanese fleet ships have totally changed appearance from how I sketched these out years back. Got away from the pagoda look and went with the Wing/Homeworld mothership style. Just more angular. It also helped that these were left over builds from the original Ala-Skan ships. Amaterasu Super Dreadnaught picture Ala-Skan Commonwealth WIP Contention Class Heavy Fleet Cruiser

Sorry to come to the thread late. While I see different influences in several lines, don't you fear some of the Kingdom of Israel ships, particularly the Shedim and the Masada, being declared a bit too derivative of GZG's UN fleet? |

"While I see different influences in several lines, don't you fear some of the Kingdom of Israel ships, particularly the Shedim and the Masada, being declared a bit too derivative of GZG's UN fleet?" Well I didnt clarify it here, but the Israeli ships shown are just kit-bashes of the GZG ships. I am just trying to capture the flavor of what they could look like, have stand-ins for them and trust me, when the original are done
there wont be any confusion or IP issues. Kirk |

"Well I didnt clarify it here, but the Israeli ships shown are just kit-bashes of the GZG ships. " No problemo; I'm easily confused

I like the ships. They're really pretty cool. Not a big fan of the "means nothing" classifications "super-dreadnought" "heavy battleship" etc. I tend to prefer designations that actually describe the ship -- destroyer, light cruiser, heavy cruiser, battlecruiser, battleship, carrier, with maybe a side of escort carrier thrown in. Admittedly, the distinction between light and heavy cruisers is pretty much meaningless for space gaming unless you set up a similar weapon disparity between the two. Then of course there is the whole dreadnought/super-dreadnought vs. battleship fallacy so many space gamers get caught up in. . . . anyway. Just one of my pet peeves about a lot of starship games. Nice ships though! :) |

You know, when it comes down to it, the variations dont really matter. A Battleship is just a Battleship, some are just bigger than others. In looking at the US Navy 1920's designation listing, it is pretty plain and simple
which I like. And I might just end up switching over to that. link |

Is that a thumbtack on the front of some of the ships, like for instance the Constellation class? |
| Kirk Alderfer | 20 Jul 2009 10:20 a.m. PST |
No, not a thumbtack. For the preliminary pieces Roderick used the comm dish from a Battletech mobile headquarters. The production piece will have a slightly different antenna hub and a 'ball' on the back. For modeling purposes though, a thumbtack would work well |

Would also discourage walkers-by from manhandling your models. |

Now the fun begins :) Per the results of the test casting and talks with the mold makers, I am going to shoot for a 4 faction first release. These will have 3 capital ships and a interceptor or fighter for each. Will post updates as I go. Kirk |
| Kirk Alderfer | 24 Jul 2009 1:32 p.m. PST |
Had a good long talk with the mold maker and looks like things are a go. Per their suggestions all of my Ala-Skan ships will be reworked or redone. Mainly the depth of the detailing needs increase to survive the press of the molding process. Also contacted a friend who does decals to get something started with those. But the plan now is for the 4 faction release, The Ala-Skan Commonwealth, United Worlds Protectorate, The Hargonne and The Vindric. The link is to the current list of total minis that are planned for each faction PDF link |

Small update per the findings from the test casting. Basically a little redesign and beefing up. Audacious update picture and Exceed redo picture |

Just as an update, we are getting away from kit-bashed hand sculpted models for our minis. Since I last posted, the Audacious Battleship and the Contention Battlecruiser has been CAD modeled and the good folks at Shapeways shapeways.com are prototyping the Audacious. If this turns out viable masters then the plan would be as with the hand sculpts. Doing this puts us behind our original schedule, but we feel we can get hte flavor we are wanting with the designs. link |
