I was never an anime fan so I don't understand why? |

It probably has to do with the 30th anniversary of the series. It's kinda like all those USS Enterprise NCC 1701 statues

And the fact that during those 30 years the series or one of its many MANY sequels have been on the air more than off. The only other titles with anywhere near its name recognition are long since vanished from broadcast in Japan. Gundam is the "Star Trek" of Japanese anime. |

Eventhough Gundam is very popular i still think that Space Cruiser Yamato/StarBlazers is the Star Trek of Japan IMHO. And lets not forget that WITHOUT Yamato coming over here to America,ANIME might've taken a different turn over here. I really love the first Gundam BUT my ALL TIME FAVORITE ANIME show IS Space Cruiser Yamato. Captain Gideon |

Forget the Gundam statue, I want a 1:1 scale Godzilla, built right next to Tokyo tower. (It's the red thing in the background) picture picture |

*Sigh*. When will they make one in 28mm?

Oh you finally noticed it huh? Captian Gideon, Gundam is marked as Japan's Star Trek for not just it being iconic. When Gundam first aired on TV in Japan it was a flop, just like Star Trek it's ratings were low. So Gundam was edited down into three 3 hour movies and it took off from there. So now 30 years later, 11 TV series, 7 OVA series, 2 movies and an unknown number of video games and models, and yet another series or two on the way. It's become Japan's Star Trek, a real monster. kmfrye would a 1/60 scale be close enough to 28mm for you? Those are out there. As well as a 5 foot tall model. picture Imagine that on your 40K game. It raises a question. Who are more insane, Star Trek fans or Gundam fans? |

Yamato is more the "Star Wars" of anime, both in Japan and the US, in terms of its effect. Older than the Gundam franchise, the original Yamato series was one of the first real serials in the format. It revolutionized the way anime was considered as entertainment. After three serials and a cluster of movies and OAVs, Yamato finally concluded, but the influence continued long afterward. Interestingly, the two revolutions in anime, as represented by Yamato and Gundam, took place in reverse order compared to the same changes (represented by Star Wars and Star Trek) in the US. In Japan, the lengthy epic adventure happened first, and the "touch of reality in issues and people" came second. In the US, Star Trek was examining, in proper Speculative Fiction fashion, issues technological, societal, and personal. The epic tale of Star Wars came (amazingly only) a decade later. I'm sure this could go back and forth, mind you. The impact and evolution of Science Fiction is a huge subject with many variations and personal interpretations. |

Sargonarhes: It raises a question. Who are more insane, Star Trek fans or Gundam fans? I am hard pressed to say. But in terms of model kits, Gundam dominates. It is also an almost exclusively male hobby, thus making it all the more sad (Trek has at least a few female Klingons haunting the conventions). |

It is also an almost exclusively male hobby, thus making it all the more sad I guess it's a good thing that you don't know about what the female Gundam followers do (especially since Gundam Wing)

That's one of the things that makes me rank Wing low. I don't like thinking about it. Seed isn't much better, at least Gundam 00 was an improvement. But the original U.C. keeps getting sequels added with Gundam Unicorn later this year, it's going to be a big Gundam 30th Anniversary. |

Sargonares – that's a sweet wee figure. And the robot is no so bad, either. :) Regards, Keith F. |

Us wacky Asians! I once met a girl who showed me her Gundam Wing fan fiction. It was pretty racy stuff. |
| Farstar | 16 Jun 2009 4:52 p.m. PST |
"Gundam Wing fan fiction. It was pretty racy stuff." Well yeah. "Racy fan fiction" is an internally redundant term 99% of the time, regardless of the show/movie/book providing the window dressing.

Ah, I forgot about them. But they do have whole comics and anime series devoted to their fetish. In explicit detail, I have heard. |
