the League of Lace Wars Imagi-Nations.

The contributors –a lot of solo wargamers among them– being scattered from Australia to Switzerland (many in North America, some in Great Britain) most had to devise at least two warring contries: thus more than 120 countries (of widely diverse levels of ‘unhistoricity' TMP link ) appear there.
Not all of these are located in an ‘alternate' Europe: for instance two thrieving ones are set in Australia, and one campaign sees major (historical) powers competing for the colonization of an archipelago absent from ‘our' maps link . Neither are the campaigns restricted to land warfare, and one is mainly naval TMP link .
Which suggests intringuing possibities, yet to be seized: what about:
- in the Gulf of Mexico / Carribean area,
. °an ex-Spanish colony independant since, say, the WSS TMP link –a great opportunity to have morions together with tricorns TMP link
TMP link
. °a ‘Pirate Republic' (a kind of Libertatia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertatia in the West Indies?) –with Pirettes
link
link of course!
- in Subsaharian Africa, will the Chefferies of Bongolesia TMP link or Afrodizia hire European mercenaries, Tchombe's Katanga fashion? Would some rogue Jacobite exiles try to carve a new country of their own (like a prelude to Stirling's ‘Dominion of Draka'?)?

Another possibilty could be for wargamers interested both in the (historical) SYW and Victorian colonial warfare, to combine these two fields in an unhistorical / untimely attempt of colonization and use their 18th C. troops against their Berbers, Guineans, Zulus, Sudaneses, Maoris, you name them (the ‘local' dress supposedly did not evolved that much, and being tolerant regarding their ‘modern' weapons, wargame minis being seen en masse from a distance). Imagine link vs link ,
generalpettygree.blogspot.com vs link ….

Perhaps more is to be discovered TMP link ?
Not the initial ‘spirit' of « Emperor vs Elector », and it will never become ‘mainstream' there, but one can endvisage a few ‘mechanical experiments': TMP link

Duke Augustus has long considered sending troops to the Dark Continent to add overseas territories to his ducal domain.

And link has been considering expanding into both the Mediterranean littoral and the southern Gulf coast of North America.

I have started Imagi-nations for Colonial gaming, but not in the 18th century. Perhaps doing so is the solution of how to paint my governmental troops for my pirate games.

I'll just make it up!

Wait for it…

abdul666lw12 Jun 2009 6:02 a.m. PST

@ emu2020: "Imagi-nations for Colonial gaming": imaginary 'colonized' (Afriboria link / Mogdonazia link / Morvalistan link Zimdar essjam.home.comcast.net/~essjam fashion) or imaginary 'colonizers', Ruritania fashion but with oversea ambitions [quite uncommon, seemingly]?
Keep us informed!
Btw @ John the OFM, what about a blog to share your achievements?
TMP link TMP link

@Battes: waiting we are, indeed!

Cheers to all.

Eli Arndt12 Jun 2009 8:59 a.m. PST

Both!

Most of mine Imagi-nations are in the context of VSF settings, though and so may ring a little less historical than some others.

Eli: pics, pics pics?
Blog, blog, blog?
(and maybe, before anyone else adds it: Beer, beer, beer!)

Eli Arndt12 Jun 2009 10:09 a.m. PST

Still in the works right now. I most recently did a bit of work on an alternate history Hawaii that remained mostly independent into the Colonial period.

I do not have a blog dedicated to them but you can check them out on my blog "I See Lead People" at -

leadpeople.blogspot.com

That is where I will posting stuff as it is completed. I really am in the start-up phase.

Oh abdul666lw! Your wait is over, you may expel your breath, at last I am here amongst my true friends. Now, would you please direct me to the place I can describe my imagi-nationals?
After all, the pleasure is soon to be all yours…

@ Battes: Jeff Hudelson, owner of the blog (and also Ruler of Saxe-Bearstein and Stagonia) wrote:

i.e. he will add you to the peoples allowed to post on 'EvE'.
See you there!

Btw, while whole continents used as campaign settings by a group *may* be seen as 'worlds of their own' (though e.g. Euratia link is part of the 'EvE' avatar of the Multiverse), some of their individual Imagi-Nations may well at the same time appear as (minor?) states of the 'EvE' Europe. A good way to 'advertise' link posts describing the history, geography, current political situation, heraldry & vexillology, OOB, regimental profiles… of your countries, which perhaps would not find room on a forum strictly devoted to the campaign events? E.g. link ? Enteburg, Habischwald, Kopf-Schlager, Melchester, Vorlund… would receive a warm welcome as individual countries of "Urope".

abdul666lw14 Jun 2009 11:37 p.m. PST

emu2020 I did not associate it to your 'Member Name' here, but I already knew and enjoyed your blog (discovered when 'surfing' from a VSF blog to another). Your 'alternate Hawaii' is as original as promising.
18th C. Hawaii, then?
Btw, for Lace Wars 'white' troops in hot climate -Carribean, Africa or Polynesia- what about 'leading astray' Russians in summer dress (waistcoat only)?

Eli Arndt15 Jun 2009 8:33 a.m. PST

Glad you are enjoying the blog. Hawaii is a bit on hold for now, but it will resume when I can get the minis I need to continue the project.

18th C. Hawaii is really just tribal Hawaii and I think if I do an 18th C. imagination it'll be Elistonia or Alcovia two childhood make-believe countries of myself and a friend.

Battes17 Jun 2009 2:43 a.m. PST

They are on the way.

Battes19 Jun 2009 9:06 p.m. PST

Well they are certainly on the way now.
Organised the first army units and have a blog spot available on EvE. Now it's just a matter of time for painting etc.
And while we are all anxiously waiting this monumental event, anyone got an opinion on a 'Soviet' style free-state, located somewhere around Hungary/Serbia/Transylvania neck of the woods sort-of?
Possibly located somewhere further east? Ukraine? Bessarabia/ Crimea? Or right in the middle of Silesia?
An enclave of western-dressed, godless, anti-Emperor, anti-Elector, recaltriant, insulated separatists. But of course, highly enlightened…

abdul666lw20 Jun 2009 1:12 a.m. PST

Original and full of potential.
More likely to have survived -as yet- the hostility of the Reactionary Monarchies if located between Christian and Musilm lands, both implicitely cajoling it as a potential ally and protecting it as a buffer zone?
Looking forward for the posts, and for sure in time a blog of your own!
Cheers,
Jean-Louis

My wife has a good reason why so many imagi-nations can thrive in virtually the same locale …
Derived from Diskworld ideas, the environment is so loaded with potential diveregences that realities overlap … thus Frankfurt Am Main can be held by different players at the same time …. and be Frankfurter on Plain in my Frankszonia!
:)
Seriously, thought, the pre-Napoleonic Europe was so splotched with overlapping and intermingled bits of autonomous entities, that there were some places legitimately ruled by three different rulers at once!

Enjoy the endless possibilities and confusion … and remember that the going rate for letting somebody march across your country to fight is one soldier= one cow for tariff purposes …

Great stuff here: link
Noy (as yet) members of 'EvE', but really should, to post 'flashnews' / links to major additions on their forum: to contribute to 'EvE' inyerfers in no way with one's own campaign!

LTC Fraiser10 Jul 2009 6:33 p.m. PST

abdul666lw: I return to the Lace Wars, in a way. At my "The Leatherstocking Wars" blog at nycar.wordpress.com I am beginning the chronicle of the refugees from my now-defunct County of Zolms, their "descendants" removed to North America. It is, I confess, rather an "alternate history". Please feel free to take a look and comment as I progress. It will be at a man-to-man and small unit skirmish level of battle, complete with Native Americans, Germans, English, etc etc. I have the beginnings of quite a nice table and am commencing to paint up those wonderful RAFM infantry and artillery I got some time back. I hope you will visit.

A votre service

Some 70 now -many solo wargamers among them:
TMP link
link

abdul666lw24 Jan 2010 5:22 a.m. PST

Update: currently, 'Emperor vs Elector' has:
- 76 contributors (at least 4 bloggers with Lace Wars fictional countries are contacted and interested, so hopefully we'll soon reach the 80 mark) [& hoping for more: TMP link !],

- 'ruling' 116 major 'true', fully original Imagi-Nations (and a score of minor 'allies'): many members, playing solo at least when it comes to 'unhistorical' encounters, developed a pair of feuding countries.

- 82 blogs are directly associated with 'EvE': some members either devote one blog to each of their Imagi-Nations, or one to the 'traditional' aspect of their campaign and another to the 'novelization' of some of their characters' (picaresque) adventures.
On the other hand a handful of members don't have a blog of their own: none is necessary. Indeed, to join one only needs:
- a blogger ID,
- preliminary ideas about your Imagi-Nation and its army. Neither a personal, nor having (as yet) a single mini is required!

Btw I just checked: taking into account the 40-some 'specialized' blogs and webpages so far not associated with 'EvE' and references here and on various other discussion groups (Old School Wargaming, Socdaisy…) and forums, I listed a grand total of 261 names of Lace Wargaming Imagi-Nations (a few, such as Freedonia and Ruritania, used more than once; at least two [groups of] wargamers use the background of the old 'War of Estavian Succession' boardgame -Arcadia, Argozia, Bravance…- for a campaign with miniatures). I got partial information -just passing intriguing references- to some 100 additional projects.

Sorry - only verified members can post on the forums.
