Hi, does anyone know how the Helion Figure Prussians compare with the Foundry 1870 Prussians? I didn't know if I could mix and match them with Foundry and Castaway Arts.

They do not, much taller. I have them in seperate units which is fine. They are beautiful figures. I also have Baker Co figures and a Division of Battle Honours Saxons. The Baker Co would mix best but there is already plenty of variety in the Helion stuff. Have a look at our game from Fisitcuffs (Link below), and if you are in the UK 4/5 Jul we are putting a bigger game on at Bovington (Shameless plug a lot of water for you to cover to see a game!). Also if you are using Wurtemburgers have a look at Waterloo to Mons, some of the mopunted commanders make good Wurttemburg Staff Officers. I don't have many Castaway but they fit better with BH/Foundry.

But once the figures are on a table in a "big battle" then the differences between the different manufacturers tend to disappear. See the following links for two battles we have fought using our FPW armies composed of Foundry, Old Glory, Castaway Arts, Askari, Falcon, and Iron Brigade figures:

Have to confirm Helion are bigger, I have lots of the Foundry figures, if I was starting again I would use the Helion ones. They are very nice.

Yep, they're bigger. I was hoping to fill out Foundry units with Helion, but no dice.

A further note, the Helion Uhlans are superb, if you are patient whatever Infantry you buy, wait for the full range of Cavalry from Helion, and start now with their Uhlans,

I don't quite get it. Helion horses seem pretty insipid. The range grows at a snails pace. After several years there are still insufficient troop types for even one side in a full wargame, never mind both!

Due to the large size of the figures there are no other directly compatible sources of artillery, gunners, most types of cavalry, dismounted cavalry, senior command etc etc. Meanwhile there are endless further variants of troop types they already produce! Is this some kind of religious cult where membership only pays off after a decade?

And what's so great about the sculpting? Compared to recent Nick Collier TAG, any Perry, etc the figures look narrow and 'unfinished', charming but clumsy. The Austrian Hussars do look lovely, and dramatically better 'finished' than the infantry, but on the same 3 passive horses every time. Help me appreciate please. What am I missing?

Revisionism!

Having now seen the more active horses and the Uhlans, I am converted to Helion cavalry. The Austrian Hussars are almost exactly the same size at my earlier Battle Honors ones(the only Battle Honors cavalry worth touching with a barge pole.)The sculpting is outstanding.

The Uhlans are very marginally larger that Foundry. Personally I wouldnt put them in the same unit, but the ones skirmishing with pistols are so good they had to be recruited – and somehow ooze summer 1870 (despite having been designed for 1866!).

Infantry not as bad as the photos, but my remarks in the previous post still have to stand. If North Star can sort this range out, which means among other things the vital need for more troop types, they could have a slow-burning winner on their hands.

Where did you see new horses?
I got a bunch of Crusaders horses to put them on but if they have new ones maybe I can give the SYW hussars I stole them from back their horses LOL

The charging cavalry (both Austrian and Prussian) come with cantering horses in at least a couple of poses. Horses not available separately though – unless North Star decide to change things. I hear from Nick that they are expecting to trade the range from next week.
