Hi, I'm a 19th century colonial gamer (both British colonials and Belgian Congo). Does anyone have opinions on Black Tree Design 28-mm Zulus? I currently own both painted 30-mm Redoubt 1882 British and 1882 Egyptians armies. I ordered about 400 BTD Zulus in April. I only received about 120 out of th 400 figures figures ordered.

I politely called and emailed BTD, they sent me some extra figures for my troubles. I'm currently waiting for the rest of my Zulus to arrive via airmail next week. The BTD Zulu sculps are beautiful and I really like the different poses that figures come in (I think they're better than the Redoubt minis I own). However, I'll reserve judgment on BTD until I get the rest of my order. Have other people had similar problems getting their orders complete? Just curious…

I wish you good luck Blake. This is a usual problem with BTD.

Blade,

Can't say too much about BTD as I only buy from them at shows when I can get my hands on the stuff and deal F2F.

However, I do wholeheartedly recommend Empress Miniatures: TMP link

Not sure about shipping to US, but I'd recommend browsing their website and maybe asking up some questions.

Good luck with BTD.

I have had good luck with BTD but they are hit or miss. In the end they get it right usually but only after substantial aggravation. BTD Zulus are nice. I personally like my Zulu hordes with shields and spears (weapons) attached. This makes for faster and easier painting. They are not all bad but just not very reliable.

Good Luck!

I did not have the best experiences dealing with BTD…

I've done 3 BTD orders.. had no problems as all.. so
I'd say 'Highly Recommended"..

I am still waiting on the remainder (most) of my order of December 2008. It is always "ready to go next week". Nice figures but so unreliable.

It's been a couple weeks and I still don't have my figures.

Hopefully they'll show up in the mail sometime this week.

However I did download the Zulu War article from Wargames Factory. Unfortunately, I ordered more "married" regiments than "unmarried" regiments (though I think no one will really care once I get the figures painted).

Dear Blake – did you like the article?

Mike,

I enjoyed the article. I have a lot of the Ospreys and Washing of the Spears by Morris and Brave Men's Blood by Ian Knight. However, your article is the first complete summary of all the Zulu regiments and their shield colors. But I'm still waiting on my BTD Zulus. If they don't get here in another week, I'll bug them again until I get most of the figures I paid for…

Dear Blake,

Thank-you

If you spot any errors or know more details – please let me know and I will do an update.

Mick

I had problems with my last order made in December.

At first I got some responses to my emails asking for the order…then I got half the order and a note that the rest would come from the USA. In the end, when I started asking for the rest of the order, not even a reply…

I ended up sending an email to BTD, "donating" the missing figures to them.

All my comms with BTD were polite…maybe they shouldn't have been polite…

It's sad to see the company that provided my Roman and Zulu armies, and provided about 80% of my HYW and WWII figures to hit so low. I wish I could still count with them but I won't risk any more orders.

Cheers
Alex

Hi Alex,

I fired an email last week and they said they'd mail my figures out on Thursday afternoon. We'll see. I've also been polite in my dealings with them. I'll just wait and see what they send me in the mail. I'm hoping for the best, but unfortunately expecting the worst. So I'm making "other plans" for my Zulus in case my BTD order doesn't show.

However, I'm not inclined to make another order to them in the future (I thought about their 28-mm Boers, but I'd probably order through Old Glory for the figures).

Regards,
Blake

I've had problems with the last three orders I placed with BTD. Half of it doesn't turn up and what does is often no what I ordered.

I shan't be ordering from them again.

Quadratus23 Jun 2009 3:07 a.m. PST

I am in the US and I placed an order with BTD two weeks ago.

I was hesitant after reading the posts on this board, so I emailed the distributor and told him what I was looking for. He told me what he had in stock. I ordered from what he had in stock. I got a personal phone call to confirm and settle up payment and my 5 items came as promised and quickly.

perhaps a pre-order call or email will help those who are hesitant.

Matt
