Are there any rules out there that do a good job of simulating the Hundred Years War, or around this time, in Europe? I'm looking to play with 28mm minis, and don't want a skirmish game. Thank you. |

I really like the Chipco Rules "Days of Knights" which we used for the Society of Ancients Battle Day last year. They give a good feel for the command and control problems. Mike |

Well, I guess I'll do my usual and recommend Impetus. Can be played with any scale miniatures based as elements. I like the way that the overenthusiasm of certain troops is dealt with, and that longbows are effective but not like some sort of medieval machinegun. I also like that it is not a rigidly I-go-you-go set, but has some interaction without bogging down or constantly checking lines-of-sight. link |

I'd second Impetus/Basic Impetus (the free version), and would also add Flower of Chivalry. I'm not sure how widely available it is any more, but it contains simple period-specific rules, lots of scenarios from the period, and basic but helpful background about the history and armies of the period. |

Basic Impetus is wonderful for an evening of gaming. I have used it for many periods. St Albans is a bit difficult to simulate. However, for most engagements I like Basic Impetus. I have Flower of Chivalry and it is a nice set of rules. You have a little paperwork to consider as your morale degrades. Also, you have to wrap you mind around a unit's fighting ability not degrading over the course of a battle, just their morale. You may also consider a Pig Wars variant for late medieval. Nice for smaller engagements and street fighting. Like St Albans. PDF link PzJg |

The inflield fly rule set down by Edward III in 1340. Changed the game. |

WAB with Age of Chivalry is also a good option. |

Armati works very well when matching up two Hundred Year War armies. |

Take your pick. Mine would likely be Medieval Warfare or Day of Battle. |

If you want historical drill and organization limits in the simulation and a minimum of abstraction, then The Art of War is something to check out

I use DBA for all ancient and medieval games. Big Battle in 25mm is great. |

I like Impetus's way of quick lettering troop types, 'wargamer speak'
. Infantry are: Heavy Infantry (FP), Light Infantry (FL), Missile troops (T) and Heavy Cavalry (CP) Doesnt give much chance of guessing what they are eh
I'd have gone for HI LI, M and HC myself lol How about "VBU" = Basic Unit value why not "BUV" :o) |

From page 3 of the Impetus rule book, English language edition: "As you will have noticed, we have chosen not to translate the codes that identify troop types and have kept the original Italian version instead. Although 'FP' (Heavy Infantry) could have been translated as 'HI', hopefully the fact that we've left them like this means that you will have much greater access to forums that are dedicated to Impetus all over the world as well as the Army Lists that are published by users from all five continents. In the same way, you'll be able to publish your Army Lists without any modification at all. The other abbreviations used in the game (VBU, etc.) have also been left in Italian for the same reason." That seems reasonable to me. Personally, I haven't had any difficulty with the Italian abbreviations used in Impetus, and I tend to find them rather less annoying than the ones employed in some other popular gaming systems. Naturally, YMMV. : ) Cheers, Scott |

I second Flower of Chivalry, it has a couple things I don't care for but it does work well. I also like DBA. And Armati is also fun but it's been a long time since I have seen a game of that. |

Just for the hell of it, and even though they've been out of print for quite some time, I will mention that our group play purely historical 14th-15th Century games -- lots of them set during the HYW -- using TACTICA MEDIEVAL and, with a handful of ever-so-slight adjustments added over the years, pretty much swears by them. And as an added bonus, the regular rulebook includes a complete and quite excellent set of siege rules. |

So does ours, but I don't know about "excellent"
