Interested in the gaming '85 & '98 in the Sudan. I have Battles for Empire & TSATF, but looking for other rules options. Wanted something with at least a few battalions a side & relatively easy/quick play. Any ideas? Also, who makes good 15mm dervish? How are Old Glory? What else out there? Thanks! |

Minifigs, Irregular and Essex, to name a few. I think the OG figs look okay, however I collect 25s and not 15s. |

Peter Pigs are velly nice, have you seen the TooFat Lardies rules in the last 'Special'? |

You might like to look at 'Science vs Pluck' by Howard Whitehouse. My Mahdists are a mixture of Essex, Old Glory and Peter Pig. |

I understand that "Science versus Pluck" will make you taller, better looking and irresistible to supermodels. link |

Peter Pig are very good and varied. |

Another vote for Science Vs Pluck. The Old Glory 15s range is pretty good band for your buck. Some other options are Lancashire Games and Stone Mountain. |

I have all the 15mm Old Glory Ansar and Fuzzy Wuzzy figures to include their baggage camels and mules. Highly recommend them. Cheers, Robert 18thcenturysojourn.blogspot.com |

Principles of War is a decent Colonial rule set. Also, the out of print "Fields of Honor" (The original colonial version, not the re-done AWI version) My 15mm colonials are a mix of Minifigs, Essex, Stone Mountain, Lancashire, and Old Glory. |

I just picked up Rampant Colonialism! by Flagship Games. So far from what I read, it looks good. Chuck

Science versus Pluck is a great resource for the period as well as a fine set of rules, and I would add Peter Pig's "Patrols in the Sudan" as a very fun and innovative set of rules. |

We used Principles of War, very good ruleset. In the past also had lots of fun with the DBA Sudan conversion printed in Miniature Wargames years ago. |

Our group has had some massive games using Battles for Empire and it has performed well. Although the rules look complex, the game play is pretty easy, especially since you can run the game through the charts given to each player. I would say that the system is very similar to ACW F&F, so if you are familiar with that game you should be able to get into BFE quickly. We like it because it does an excellent job of simulating what I like to call the "lava flow" of the native advance. Different sides of the native attack move at varying speeds, so you never know from what direction the final surge will be from. It makes it tense for the native and imperial players as coordinating the native attack is unpredictable at best. In some games they rush in piecemeal and the imperial forces hold while in a few other games they all charge at the same time and overwhelm the defenses! Definitely worth a try. |

Another vote for 'Science versus Pluck' which is a very strong, period-specific set of rules. The Peter Pig Mahdists are full of character & offer plenty of variants. Old Glory 15mm are good as well, but don't mix well. 'The Great Game' (via freewargamesrules.co.uk) is also worth looking at. Principles of War, while good, lacks period character somehow. All are suited for brigade & divisionable level games. 1884/5 can be more fun than '98, with a wider variety of troop types involved. |

I've gone for Perry figures as there weren't any 15 mm that I was really drawn to. I prefer 15mm but the Perry stuff is wonderful. Rules, I've looked at most of the sets mentioned here but have settled on the TooFatLardies set. I've played a few games and think they are great fun. |

Our Induanas! Colonels and Emirs! came in second to TSATF in 1984 during the HG Wells award for best miniature rules. We did a revision in 2000 which still allowed for matrix use and a method for bucket of dice players as well. The rules and lists are for large scale battles at a 1:10 for Eurpeans to 1:15 scale for natives. |

Yeah, Battles for Empire does keep the Imperial player guessing about how quickly and WHERE the Natives will pile on. The Great Game has some cool stuff. Scenarios and some interesting ideas. However, there is a quite large logic gap in the rules and the author apparently doesn't get involved in any discussion about the rules. I REALLY wanted to give them a go. However, as is they simply don't work. I like Field of battle by Piquet for my larger scale Colonial games. It'll scare the crap out of you watching the Natives close and wondering WHEN to fire and IF you'll get another chance before they close! I did that with my Natal Native Contingent and was sweating blood worrying about it. ;-D Great stuff! Thanks, John |

A good rules set I use, if you can still get it is Imperialism, by Lynne Bodin I think. They are good for larger scale battles which I imagine 15mm figs suit.I play 25/28 and use mainly essex and Brittannia mniatures. The Perry ranges look sublime! good luck, it's agood period to game with alot of variety in troop types and suppor stuff; ships, armoured trains et al cheers |
