I completed my Fw-189. Overall it is a good kit with very few problems. The kit comes with gear down, so I trimmed off the gear doors and filled the gap in with epoxy putty. Also filled in the tail gear gap. I also added plain prop spinners with epoxy, but on review, the vaned prop pitch caps on the end of propellers don't rotate with the propeller, so the supplied props with the vanes on the end would be more appropriate.

I don't normally add guns or aerials since they have a tendency to break off during play so there is no gun coming from the top rear turret.

The paint scheme is roughly RLM 71 (Dark Green) with a RLM 79 sand brown wave pattern over the top. The bottom is RLM 76 light blue. I don't use any standard colors so these are a mixture of Delta Ceramacoat, Americana, and Applebarrel colors/mixtures.

The canopy was done with the same light blue as the underside with a medium blue/light blue mix for the shading color, a light gray as the lighter tint and a dab of white for the highlight.

Yellow fuselage bands are painted after the primary colors are done and use a plain white base coat then two layers of yellow to provide better coverage.

Wing decals are extra German Fighter insignia from True North Productions. I did not have crosses small enough to fit on the fuselage so those are hand painted. Due to the lack of small enough letters, the call letters were omitted, but I was going to do 6M+AH of the Afkl.Gr(f)11.

The maneuver surface lines have been enhanced with a wash mixture of charcoal gray diluted with Future acrylic floor wash. Some panel lines were also enhanced with this mix.

Mounting system is a 1/16" aluminum tube embedded in the lower fuselage pointing slightly downward. The cavity was dug with a dremel tool with a reaming bit, the tube embedded with epoxy then sanded down flush.

Very nice. The camo pattern and canopy came out quite well. What other goodies are on the assembly line? Kevin

Agreed – lovely job in general, but that camo pattern has turned out very nicely indeed.

Beautiful!

One of my all time favourite planes. Lovely job on that camo.

Next is either a Whirlwind or F7F Tigercat. The Whirlwind is from Don Schmenk and the Tigercat is from Terry Patrick. It will probably be a few weeks until they are done as I have other "honey do" things to finish this week.

Binhan, did you order the Whirlwind & F7F from Air Alex or someplace else? Kevin

Binhan Lin31 May 2009 3:26 p.m. PST

The Whirlwind is from Don Schmenk directly. You will find that most of Don Schmenk's stuff has been detailed and recast by AirAlex and propellers and decals added to make a new kit. Stuff from Don is very basic – usually just a plane, sometimes with props and sometimes with landing gear, no decals. Detail is minimal, usually just a couple aileron and elevator lines, no panel lines.

His website is:
userpages.bright.net/~dschmenk
prices were about $5 USD or $6 USD per plane, but as noted before, they are very basic. You need to e-mail him to get the latest list for availability and prices. He is a hobbyist not a manufacturer, so sometimes it takes a while to get planes from him.

The Tigercat is from Terry Patrick, and I don't know if he is still producing them as when I got mine in 2007, he was considering retiring from casting. Pricing then was $4 USD each.

Grumman F7F-3 Tigercat, a Terry Patrick model available from him at
