Anybody recommend good books on the ECW – particularily the Irish phase 1649 – 1652. Battles, Seiges, OOB etc. Thanks.

The best book I've read for the Confederate armies in any depth is 'Confederate Catholics At War 1641-49' by Padraig Lenihan (Cork University Press)-lots of information on who they were and how they were organised etc-but no specific OOBs or uniform info. although that seems to be non-existent anyway.

I was asked about Cromwell's invasion and realise that I have five books on that alone.

Go with the above suggestion.

'Cromwell, An Honourable Enemy: The Untold Story of the Cromwellian Invasion of Ireland' Tom Reilly, Phoenix Press, London, 2000. ISBN:1842120808.
A superbly referenced history of ther period which comprehensively knocks down many of the myths that have been perpetuated by more recent agendas rather than objective historical assessment.

Covers Drogheda, Wexford, the Munster Campaign and Clonmel in detail and will give you more than enough reference material to follow up on.

Whether you agree with his 'revisionist' perspective or not, it is a great review of the 1649-50 campaigns. And lest he be accused of partisan history – he is Irish from Drogheda.

Sean Sweeney's article "AN INTRODUCfiON TO THE CONFEDERATE WARS IN IRELAND (1641 – 1653)" in Wargames Illustrated #145 has an excellent overview of this part of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, including some colour drawings of troops and standards.

Sean's recent death was a great loss to wargaming in Ireland.

Thanks for recommending the Wargames Illustrated article. I managed to borrow a copy and found it interesting.

Owen Roe O'Neil and the Struggle For Catholic Ireland by Jerold Casaway University of Pennsylvania Press is excellent.

I enjoyed Confederate Catholics At War 1641-49' by Padraig Lenihan but was left wondering if the author was a direct descendent of Thomas Preston.

Hayes McCoy covers Benburb and Rathmines in his Irish Battles.

On the politics rather than the battles per se, try Micheal O Siochru's "God's executioner: Oliver Cromwell and the conquest of ireland." Faber and Faber 2008. A good read!
