Painting and modelling Friendships made over the years Helps give a desire to read about history (as I child I hated reading anything) My wife knows where I am over the weekend when I go out Relatively speaking, it's a cheap hobby. |

I can use stuff I bought 30 years ago and it still works. I can be really terrible at it, and it doesn't matter. There's no end to it. I'll never run out of stuff. I can change direction at any time, and it doesn't matter. I'll be able to keep doing it until I'm too old to see anything anymore. And even then I might figure out a way. |

The creativity in painting, basing, remodelling, setting up dioramas, etc. You can get a lot of figures into a small space. Pretty cost-effective – figures aren't necessarily expensive and paints, etc., once purchased, last a while. The best kind of retail therapy – the fun of trawling the web knowing you'll always find something to buy. TMP. |

It's several hobbies in one
collecting, painting, modeling, wargaming. It seems to attract a more literate sort of person. It gives me an excuse to play with toys. As hobbies go it's not all that expensive. For folks that don't much care for sports it's a good alternative source of male-bonding. |

Agree with what everyone else has said about the creatvity (painting & modelling) Forces me to read up on areas that have not traditionaly been an area of schooling for me. Broadens my horizons in effect. Fellowship is a hard one. In most cases, most I have met through the hobby have been very approachable and easy to get on with. However, as with any other pasttime, there are those who seem to enjoy lording over others, often based on some small idea of superiority in their knowledge over some obscure topic. Think the comic store owner in the Simpsons cartoon. And, unfortunately, our hobby seems to be able to attract a high proportion of said individuals. However, on the flip side with the internet, I have been able to connect and get invovled in the hobby with people I would normally not connect with all over the globe. As such, the hobby, along with the internet, has given me the ability to connect to ppl all over the world. As a hobby, it also allows me to be as social or antisocial as I would like. Gaming allows for the social aspects with friends and other gamers
..as well as conventions, etc. On the flip side, if I am feeling less than social, i am still able to partake in the hobby with painting/modelling, research or even solo gaming finally, as hobbies go, it is relatively harmless compared with other past times. also, if time is pressing, one can usually grab some hobby time at odd hours
..just not the social gaming side of the hobby :) |

Painting. The actual gaming. Reading new rulesets. Getting into historical periods that I would have never found interest in. A chance to hang out with me mates. I don't have to put down the beer to play a minis game. and my wife KNOWS that I am too much of a gamer to get into too much trouble! |

Social Activity – hang out with old friends, and get to meet new people with similar interests. History – researching a period. Creativity – painting figures, building terrain, cobbling together some clockwork nightmare, etc. Conventions – yes, I actually LIKE conventions. Flexibility – if the club can't get together, I can always spend the time painting. There's ALWAYS more to paint. :) Al | rivetsandsteam.com |

An activity with most of my best friends a couple of times a month Conventions with said best friends All of the useless information I get while researching Getting to play with toys still an an adult |
