With the anniversery of Tsushima coming at the end of the month i thought i'd ask this question regarding this famous Naval Battle and wondered if anyone has gamed this Battle.

For me i did run a Tsushima game some years ago at a local convention, and my memory fails me with regards as to who won.

So has anyone else fought this battle and if so how did it go?

Scale Creep Miniatures13 May 2009 7:43 a.m. PST

Not yet, but I have the ship models for it…some day….sigh

The Monstrous Jake13 May 2009 8:13 a.m. PST

Many times.

Every time I can recall, the Japanese won, although when we used a point system to try to balance it out the Russians almost came close a couple of times to getting at least a draw.

I've always gamed the 56-ship version. I haven't done it yet with all 106 ships involved, although I now have all of 106 ships in 1:6000 in case I ever get around to trying it.

Martin Rapier13 May 2009 8:38 a.m. PST

Yes, I've done it a few times.

Generally the Japanese win, but I have seen one glorious Russian victory where they managed to defeat the Japanese piecemeal.

Played it once in phases, Ist day, night, 2nd day. The Russian 2nd squadron did a lot better than expected. I don't think we down-rated their guns enough. Night was all Japanese as was the second day. Japanese still won but lost some ships. Our Togo wasn't as good or as lucky as the historical one. It's a tough scenario for the Russians to do well on if you set it up accurately. Definitely worth a try.

One problem i have is the Russian Auxiliary vessels that was at Tsushima.

There were 9 Aux vessels at Tsushims now between Navwar and WTJ i have 5 of the 9 ships that have been made as mini's.

So that means that i'm still needing 4 Russian Aux ships which i've been told that some if not all in the works by WTJ.

For my miniatures i have 1/3000th scale mini's and i'm in the process of painting up the WTJ Russian Pacific Squadron and the Japanese Fleet.

One other Naval Battle that took place during the war was the Battle of the Yellow Sea,now my friends and myself played this Battle out several years ago.

The rules we used was Fire When Ready by David Manly.

Well what we did was used the main forces for both sides leaving the light forces out of it,and the Russian rolled over the Japanese.

To give a few examples the Mikasa was a burned out wreak and the Russian Battleship Tsesarevitch rammed and cut the Japanese Battleship Fuji in two.

The Russians did'nt lose anything.

For myself this war is an interesting war since i like both sides, and i can play on either side.

A friend of mine did a small booklet about the alternative Russo Japanese War(mostly from the Naval point of view) several years ago.

If possible could some of you post some pictures of your Russian and Japanese minis?

Thanks
Captain Gideon

Since these photos were taken, I've replaced all my 1:3000 scale ships with 1:6000 scale, but I don't have any photos of the new ones yet.

The pictures look nice and i remember Shipbase III my group used to use it back in the 80's i believe.

It was a decent rules set as far as i remember and it was my first contact with a computer.

One question on the 1/6000th scale minis do they have the Russian Auxiliary ships for Tsushima?

Thanks
Captain Gideon

Doing the playtesting for Naval Thunder: Rise of the Battleship, the Russians got crushed – although came close a couple times.

We were using the scenario rules though that take into account the poor state of the Russian crews, morale, and ships.

If you were to run it as a straight up fight I wonder if the Russians wouldn't win it pretty handily.

We published it in the summer of 1993 I think.

It was a decent rules set as far as i remember and it was my first contact with a computer.

I still use it for all my naval games, but I use newer variants.

One question on the 1/6000th scale minis do they have the Russian Auxiliary ships for Tsushima?

They have some of them available, but for most of them I think I had to use generic pre-Dread period transports, and some I modified from other ship types.

Captain Gideon15 May 2009 8:24 p.m. PST

I just checked and you're right 1993 was indeed the year Shipbase III came out.

As for the Russian Aux's in 1/3000th scale they make 5 of the 9,2 were made by WTJ and the rest by Navwar.

As for 1/6000th scale i have the Japanese,German and Italian Fleets for WWII,but for me i think 1/3000th is the scale for me when it comes to the Pre-Dreadnought era.

For me the Russo Japanese is a favorite period i'm into since i've been interested in the Russo Japanese War for many years.

Just curious might you have any resource books on the Russo Japanese War?

Thanks
Captain Gideon

Yes, but I think the Battle of the Yellow Sea is a more balanced scenario.

Tuned out historically each time I've done it.

138SquadronRAF -

I agree. In fact the last playest we did for Naval Thunder of The Battle of the Yellow Sea even came out with the historical result – even to the point of a bridge hit on the Tsesarevitch causing the Russian line to fall into disarray.

Good times! :)

sergeis25 May 2009 2:05 p.m. PST

Never did Tsushima, but was a witness of a great Yellow sea battle at last Cold Wars- run by Jim Kasper. Russians won handily, but with some losses. I believe he did entire squadrons, including lights. I have Russians painted in 2400 scale- but not Tsushima, rather Russian Far East fleet, including Vladivostok squadron. I also painted entire Japanese fleet for a friend. We do Perfidious Albion quite often…
There is decent US Russo-Japanese war site ( I believe link above), but it really pales before some Russian sites- unfortunately those are in Russian only…

Captain Gideon25 May 2009 8:38 p.m. PST

Do you have any of the Russian links?

Anyone have any piccies of the fleets for Tsushima in 1:6000? Would love to see them!
