Hey all,

Is there a good history out there on this battle? Any help is appreciated.

Regards, Bill

Castles of Steel covers WWI naval and devotes a chapter to Dogger Bank. Although not solely on Dogger Bank, this book is a great read. I got a copy at Half Price Book about two years ago.

Ditto David on "Steel Castles." Most books on Jutland have some info on Dogger Bank as a precursor, especially on unrecognized problems of the BC squadron.

Thanks for the replys. I have Castles of Steel, a very interesting read. It's what got me into WWI naval gaming.

I was following the thread about where to start collecting for the period and bought the battle cruisers and the little cruisers from the OB and wanted to get some deeper understanding of the battle itself.

I found a book on Heligoland, and one on Coronel and the Falklands. Jutland has a derth of books out there too. I just can't find one on Dogger Bank.

There are several summaries of all WWI naval combat that address the battle.

I have a copy of Naval Battles of the First World War by Geoffry Bennet. Don't recall specifically its treatment of Dogger Bank but its in there, and my overall recollection of the book was favorable.

With regards to Dogger Bank is there any source out there that lists the full OOB for both sides.

I know that both sides had Battlecruisers and some light cruisers, but what about Destroyers?

WKeyser's link to the GHQ article has an OOB. I got mine from worldwar1.co.uk This site has a bunch of short articles on some battles with OOBs for them too.

Bill,
worldwar1.co.uk is a great resource. Be glad you found it.

I took your topic and searched WorldCat. I found 4 or 5 books on Dogger Bank in German, 1 in French, and only one in English.

Battle of Dogger Bank, 24th January 1915.
Black, William B.
Lenzie, Dunbartonshire, Scotland : [s.n.],1982
Series: Naval actions of the first World War study no. 101/79

The only library with it cataloged was the US Naval History Center.

I'm suprised there are so few. Maybe you might have better luck looking for a biography of Beatty or Chatfield.

I'm going to follow up on this series and see what I can find.

Thanks Jeff this is what i needed.

Many Thanks

Captain Gideon,

You are most welcome. I have been rather surprised to discover that a great deal of information on both ships and battles for both the Pre-Dreadnought and WWI eras is available on Wikipedia. It isn't all necessarily definitive, but there is far more there than I expected.

My sincere thanks to whoever posted all of it.

If you can get hold of a copy:

From the Dreadnought to Scapa Flow, vol 2 by A J Marder is the most comprehensive study of the battle despite the fact that the book is over 40 years old
