Stu and I took to the table again. The battle ended in a grinding engagement between the armies.

Interesting stuff – which manaufacturer are the miniatures made by?

Look like Baccus.

Thanks,

John

I am old, blind and lazy. Are these little Bleeped texts hard to paint well?

Great battle report, as always!

Cheers,
Scott

No 6mm figs aren't hard to paint. Like everything it's about using the proper technique. Focus is more on the unit rather than the individual figure. Pete Berry discusses this at his website. Great info there.

Thanks,

John

They get harder to paint when you are over 40 and your close vision starts to fade.

As said above, the key is to use the right techniques and don't worry about the buttonhole lace pattern.

Jet,

I'm curious about a couple of mechanisms.

you report your legionaries charging cataphracts.
where there any exceptional circumstances involved?

I wouldn't expect close formation foot troops to attack cats – or any other impact mounted – or does impetus take the not unreasonable view that cats were not charging troops?

also, you talk of a slog in the centre – were the cats able to break off and charge in again (if impetus has them as charging troops, that is)

Perhaps I'll give it a whirl. Can always offload them on Ebay if it isn't my thing…

Without going into detail… yes. The cataphracts can counter-charge my infantry (and hence, get their impetous bonus), whereas infantry can't counter-charge the cavalry

Cats are treated as charging troops, but are so high quality, that they are quite substantial in melee, even when they are not the initiators of the charge. And as mentioned above, they will most often be at full effectiveness (by charging or counter-charging) as long as they are fresh.

also, you talk of a slog in the centre – were the cats able to break off and charge in again (if impetus has them as charging troops, that is)

They could have disengaged, as they move faster than the legion. If a die roll is passed, the unit disengages, is disordered, and ends its activation. A failure of the die roll means the unit is stuck in the combat it was trying to avoid.

The Impetus rules are compact, yet deep. Because Stu and I have had a couple of 3-week inactive periods, we still rely on the book a little. I think our play time will decrease and our decision-making will improve as we play more regularly.

Finally, if 6mm isn't your thing, I would strongly consider trying Impetus at any scale you're in to. I have a hankering to try every other scale, but I'm trying to stay focused.

When the close vision starts to fade. Just get magnified glass that fit over your head. Makes all the different in the world.
