Here's something I just completed, a Hellenistic war elephant. The figure is by Tylinksi. Painted with acrylics. picture picture "Real" or not, it was fun to paint. :) Steve |

Truly stunning! I recently purchased some flats. That's one of the best paint jobs I've seen. |

Nice job! Something to satisfy the Hyborian campaign in you. |

Thanks, guys. :) The pictures are in focus but my camera washed out the colors a bit. The large caparison is more purple in hue, the elephant more brownish. Steve |

So what does an unpainted flat like that cost, please? Simon |
CorporalTrim | 07 May 2009 6:38 a.m. PST |
Thanks again, guys. The background is the map from my old S&T magazine Successors game. Prime as you would any wargames figures. Simon, unpainted 30mm war elephant flats range from 6.00 – 20 euros. Depends upon which dealer you buy from. They do pop up on eBay now and then as well. Steve |
BigRedBat | 07 May 2009 12:32 p.m. PST |
I recognised the background; Successors is one of my favourite games. 6-20 Euros makes them relatively affordable. I'll pick up one up if I see it on Ebay; takes me back Hyborea, too

Yeah, that's my goal too. A Tony Bath style army. Here's a shot more in that vein, the colors are more true to life here. picture eBay is a crap shoot, Simon. Something may pop up soon or you could wait quite a while. Here's a couple of other possibilities. First, Zinnfiguren Hoffman (go down the page to the Ancients). They're cast from old Heinrichsen molds, hence a bit old school and 28mm scale. But the price is right, 5.50 – 6.50 euros. link Another is GO International. A set of three war elephants, ready for the shopping cart. link Maybe more than you need but they'll sell singles, and the convenience of using English and Paypal transactions is a plus. Steve |

Hi Steve, I think yours is the best; the GO ones look a little over-engineered for a Carthaginian nellie! The painting on your nellie and the foot is splendid. Thanks, Simon |
CorporalTrim | 08 May 2009 5:59 p.m. PST |
Thanks, Simon. You're right about the GO elephants. The appearance is bit fanciful by modern standards of scholarship. Berliner Zinnfiguren has an excellent selection of war elephants, that's where I got mine. That's the good news. The bad news is they're expensive @ 19.95 euros. BZ doesn't edit their own, they retail Lampert and Tylinksi's elephants; the collector takes a hit for BZ's profit margin. I have Lampert's catalog on order, going to cut out the middle man. Steve |

20 Euros seems a lot for a flat, although I suppose I have paid similar prices for 28mm resin elephants with metal crew. But they are multi-piece kits. Simon |

Steve, Keep us informed about your success with Lampert. I wouldn't mind trying him out if you have success. Does he accept Paypal?

If you are living in the EU you could use a simple EU bank transfer, relatively fast and cheap! Ulenspiegel |

BTW Nice paintjob, CorporalTrim! I have the Lampert catalog, so my bet is that you will have an elephant heavy army within one year and your next project is a celtic army with lots of chariots :-))) |

Thanks, Ulenspiegel. :) Yes, I got the Lampert catalog. His war elephants are great, 10-15 euros depending upon the complexity. Well, the whole selection is amazing, particularly if you fancy Romans. Sorry, Scott. No English, no Paypal, no credit cards: bank transfer only. But not so bad if you use Zoom.com, $4.95 USD to play your own transfer vs. paying your US bank >$30 in fees to do the same thing. Steve |
Asterix | 24 May 2009 1:17 p.m. PST |
"No English, no Paypal, no credit cards:" That pretty much means "no deal" as far as I'm concerned. Thanks anyway, Steve. Scott |
CorporalTrim | 26 May 2009 8:45 p.m. PST |
No worries, Scott. That's completely understandable. For me, the bank transfer fee equates to Berliner Zinnfiguren's markup on one war elephant, so I'm willing to move forward providing the postage costs aren't outrageous. I think the biggest impediment to most would be that Lampert won't break up the sets (if I translated the conditions of doing business correctly). And while the price per figure is reasonable, a lot of his units are large sized. Selling the extras you won't get around to painting on eBay is an option but what you can actually recover there is always a roll of the dice. Steve |
| Ulenspiegel | 27 May 2009 10:56 a.m. PST |
@CorporalTrim You have understood the conditions correctly :-) On the other hand, E. Lampert seems to be a reasonable man and I would simply ask him, whether he would deliver series that fit the requirements of your war game – assume you need less rank and file figures, as you do not play with a 1:4 figure scale. If your proposed order is not in the 15 Euro range but much higher, I would expect he accepts :-))) He may also recognise that war gamers in the UK and USA are future customers if he changes his conditions a little bit. Greetings from Graz! |
CorporalTrim | 28 May 2009 6:46 p.m. PST |
Thanks, Ulenspiegel ! I was thinking the same thing, wouldn't hurt to ask. For openers, I'm interested in the imitation legionaries/Thorakites (a little hard to tell from the drawings but I'm pretty sure that's what they are), Cretan archers, Seleucid cataphracts and of course one or two elephants. :) Regards, Steve |

Thanks for the offer, Ulenspiegel. I think I can get the point across in Babelfish. It does an execrable job with the grammar, but so long as I keep the English half simple and avoid ambiguous words it should be okay. Don't be too modest about your English, it's fine. :) Steve |
