If I have room in my budget and my reading list for ONE book about McClellan, which book should that be?

Definitely Stephen Sears. A very readable book.

Another echoe for Sears.

I'll buck the trend and recommend Rafuse. I assume you will get the conventional picture of McClellan from any general history of the war. Rafuse gives us McClellan on McClellan's own terms. I didn't set down the book with any greater opinion of McClellan, but I did feel that I understood him better.

Why would one want to read a whole book devoted to McClellan? Wouldn't that be like reading a whole book on Bragg …

Of course, I did read a book on Bragg once, but it was only Volume I, and it stopped after Stone's River. Volume II was never written because the author was sick to death of Bragg.

Just a thought … no offense intended :)

There is a Vol II on Bragg written by Judith Lee Hallock with the support of Grady McWhiney, author of Vol I. Did not enjoy it as much but it does finish Bragg's life.
