Ah but was it really shot down? There's the beauty to the F-111, at least early models, you can burst the bubble of your gloating opponent by saying mechanical failure. :-)

Unless the terrain following radar managed to miss the dam, then yes, it was shot down. Come to think of it, the targetting computer missed the dam(ned) thing completely, so…..yeah, that does sound like a good excuse ;)
