I initially thought of doing them seated:

But then thought that the elongated body might work best.

What do you guys think? Alien enough? Any recommendations?

Thanks.

Very nice. They could be exhibited at the MOMA in New York.

Captain Apathy22 Apr 2009 12:44 p.m. PST

Looks good to me. Shooting for a Martian Chronicles effect?

Cacique Caribe22 Apr 2009 12:47 p.m. PST

"Shooting for a Martian Chronicles effect?"

That's exactly what I was going for.

Ambush Alley Games22 Apr 2009 1:05 p.m. PST

I like them a lot! I think you really got the Martian Chronicles feel across. Nice work!

Pictors Studio22 Apr 2009 1:11 p.m. PST

Looks pretty cool to me too.

Jovian122 Apr 2009 1:14 p.m. PST

So far so good – looking forward to more photos as your work progresses. Nice feel to them thus far though! Kudos!

Mulligan22 Apr 2009 1:18 p.m. PST

Once again, splendid work, CC! You should cast a dozen of them.

Mulligan

I was thinking if you cast a whole bunch of them, it might look cool to have some of the statues cast as broken: maybe with diagonal breakage lines across the torso and the top pieces slightly off center as though they had slowly been sliding out of alignment over the centuries, pushed by the relentless Martian winds. (Emphasize that Ozymandias feeling.)

Jamesonsafari22 Apr 2009 1:35 p.m. PST

Looks good. A bit of paint and they'll look like ancient statues right enough!

Cacique Caribe22 Apr 2009 1:36 p.m. PST

Should I line a tunnel or two with them to each side? Or would that be a bit too much?

CC

chronoglide22 Apr 2009 1:48 p.m. PST

i bet you say that to all the girls….

Henry V22 Apr 2009 2:46 p.m. PST

Those are really nice. I also like Mulligan's idea of having a few cast to look like ruins.

Alxbates22 Apr 2009 2:50 p.m. PST

I think they look pretty cool, CC.

Thanks for posting the pics!

jpattern222 Apr 2009 3:31 p.m. PST

How cool are those? Nice work, CC!

J Womack 9422 Apr 2009 3:32 p.m. PST

Very cool. I think standing definitely, to avoid looking as if copying the seated pharoahs.

You have definitely got the Martian Chronicles look going, too. I have thought about trying something similar, but looking like the Black Hat Martians, as that is what I am using for my games, mainly. Well, that and I don't sculpt well.

What medium were you using for those? Do I detect Sculpey? Or is that greenstuff you were using?

streetline22 Apr 2009 3:35 p.m. PST

Very nice!

Cacique Caribe22 Apr 2009 3:44 p.m. PST

Thanks!!!

It's Greenstuff. I made the one on the right and, after making a quick latex push-mould of it, made the next one. Then I sanded them lightly, horizontally, to simulate wind erosion a bit. Added some "cracks" and chips, and done.

I guess that, if I needed to, I could make one per day with that one mould.

Pyrate Captain22 Apr 2009 3:49 p.m. PST

It's beautiful, but is it "PULP"?

jpattern222 Apr 2009 3:50 p.m. PST

"The Martian Chronicles" is at least as much Pulp and Fantasy as it is Sci-Fi.

Cacique Caribe22 Apr 2009 3:51 p.m. PST

Dunno. Could also be used as an Atlantean temple in some Pulp jungle or desert settings, I guess.

Wouldn't a few "Flash Gordon" or "Doc Savage" miniatures in front make the gate and colossi Pulp?

CC

darthfozzywig22 Apr 2009 6:02 p.m. PST

Winner. Those are very cool.

I also don't know that you need to avoid a look that evokes the pharoahs. After all, everyone knows the Martians taught the Egyptians everything they knew.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART22 Apr 2009 6:35 p.m. PST

Good work, like 'em

Yes … Very Nice !! thumbs up

Those are great. Like the standing pose better.

Are these part of your "Martian Separatist" project?

Cacique Caribe22 Apr 2009 8:19 p.m. PST

Guiscard,

They are actually for this setting:

As I mentioned in the other thread these are top notch- very alien looking, I think!

One idea might be paint up the 'eye' as some sort of gem or glass rather then just stone.

Paintbeast23 Apr 2009 6:44 a.m. PST

You might try casting them in Hydrocal or the like so that when you go to weather and chip them it will be far easier to get a realistic effect. I'd also be very tempted to try casting some glass beads directly into them.

J Womack 9423 Apr 2009 8:39 a.m. PST

Oh man, cast a Swarovski (sp?) crystal right in it for the eye? One of those mirror-backed, faceted glass jobs? That would be incredibly cool if it worked!

I might be able to do something like it for my 15mm Martian corridors, don't you think?

Perhaps if I make each section something like 3" by 3"? Or should I try something bigger or smaller for 15mm gaming?

Thanks.

CC

SimonF09 Jun 2009 7:15 p.m. PST

Wow, that guy makes some really cool terrain.

3"x3" sounds like a pretty good size for 15mm. I'd make the walls really low.
Maybe make some simple "proxy" ones to test the size out. You could use paper for example, just cut out 3x3 squares of paper and draw the walls on.

Cacique Caribe09 Jun 2009 10:12 p.m. PST

I'm thinking of making the walls about 25mm. Does that sound about right to you?

Thanks.

What do you guys think of using these LOTR ruin sprues?

Look at how they look as facings for ruined buildings here:

What do you think?

I like how the Colossi look close enough to the type of thing you might find here on Earth, but also have a nice obvious "hey guys, these statues aren't of humans" factor going for them.

Check out these Hirst corridors for Space Hulk, CC hirstarts.com I think a similar low wall would be more useable, allowing you free access to your minis, 25mm walls wont do that.

Man, I love this look, but for Alien-faced Colossi:

CC, you really ought to make some plaster casts of those statues, I'd take like, 6.
