I'm finding it difficult to find any titles which cover all classes of ship.

Is there a book out there which;

* Covers the entire history
* has at least one photo or diagram for each ship
* has some colour as a bonus?

Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945

Hansgeorg Jentschura, translated by Anthony Preston and D. K. Brown

If you can get your hands on it.

Every class and ship listed, drawings or photos and often deckplans for most. No color though.

Awesome. I'll begin my search now I have a name :)

Another title – though long out of print – Watts, Anthony J. and Gordon, Brian J. The Imperial Japanese Navy. New York: Doubleday & Co., 1971.

Jentschura's a fine book too. I have a copy in my library.

Agree with VSB and G Dog. I have each of those books
and feel as if I don't really need any other references
on the IJN.

I would add Evans and Peattie "Kaigun", Naval Institute Press, 1997.

Proably the most serious study in IJN technology, tactic, stategy and ship design.

Arrigo

I agree with Arrigo. Kaigun belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in the IJN. As well as anyone interested in seeing how a military can drive itself and its country to disaster. A fascinating book.

I just picked up a copy of:
Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945 off of Amazon.

For color paintings of a large number of WWII IJN, go here:

Thanks for all your suggestions. Nice link aercdr. Looks like the wife will be securing me a copy of Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945 for my birthday :)
