Earth Force Marines land on what appears to be a planet devoid of sentient life:

link

There are ruins all about, evidence of a cataclysmic event ages ago.

But then, one by one, the troops begin to disappear . . . Something, or someone, is still living among the ruins!

----------------------------------------------------------

So, how about outfitting these otherwise unarmed guys with shields, spears and other primitive, but alien-looking, weapons?

link
rebelminis.com/15algru.html

What odd-shaped shields could I buy or make? Any suggestions for making their primitive weapons seem alien-looking?

And what do you think of the premise/scenario? It's usually the humans that are portrayed as post-apocalyptic, right?

CC
PS. And please don't say probes! :)

LOL !!! Gave some of my unarmed ones probes, already evil grin

Cacique Caribe16 Apr 2009 4:06 p.m. PST

See! That's why I said "primitive", not "barbaric"!!!

Vell, still have 19 left? There's some 15mm celtic shields on ebay. 24 for about $4.50 USD (right now) They might work ?

Cacique Caribe16 Apr 2009 4:36 p.m. PST

Could this shield type pass for alien?

What do you think?

Saucer shaped shields would be pretty tongue-in-cheek (round with a big knobby boss). How about small rectangular shields strapped to each arm leaving the hands free for weapons?? Your idea is pretty fun…I like the idea of little greys running through the rubble.

"How about small rectangular shields strapped to each arm leaving the hands free for weapons??"

Hmmm. That sounds interesting!

CC if it were me, I would do something like your Time Machine stuff.
Here you go, in 15mm too.
Add some fur clothing and odd spears, and shields.
Bam, 15mm mutants.

Add a few bumps and large eye or jaw effects to their faces/bodies…and you are golden.

You can do it with a little putty no problems.

Mmmm… no. Its an intriguing idea, but it just doesn't fit.

The whole idea behind alien Greys is that they are smarter and more technologically advanced than we are, and love to rectally probe us, cut circles in our crops, tip over our cows, and just generally Bleeped text with us.

Greys being post-apocalyptic primitives just doesn't fit with that, at least IMHO.

I like the idea of arming them with stone-tipped spears and axes, but I wouldn't give them shields, helmets, or armor of any kind. Or, to emphasize the post-apocalyptic theme, make the blades of their weapons out of sections of ancient street signs and things of that sort.

Bernie Wrightson wrote and illustrated a story years ago in which the last true human, in full bodysuit and face-hiding helmet-mask, hunted mutated humans across a post-apocalyptic landscape, then mounted their heads on the walls of his home.

The mutated humans resembled small grays, and they weren't armed in any way. Too busy digging in the muck for mutated tubers to bother fighting each other. Easy pickings for the human, with his high-tech laser rifle.

Except in the last panel the "human" is revealed to be a robot. That's right there are *no* true humans left, and our mutated descendants are being hunted to extinction by a dang *robot*! Betcha didn't see *that* one coming!

(Actually, in comics of that era, the only twist ending more common than that one was when the guy whose face you never saw until the last panel turned out to be . . . HITLER!!!)

Khrusan Miniatures has a pack of seperate shields in their Sarmatian range that might fit the bill: picture

A mix of round and rectangular

JPattern2,

Wow. Though I'd never heard of it before now, I love that tale. Particularly what you said, that, in the end, it was a robot.

Awesome.

It was collected in his book "Badtime (sic) Stories." It sells used for $30 USD or more. I love Wrightson's work.

Cacique Caribe17 Apr 2009 11:15 p.m. PST

JPattern, I must look that up. Very nice! Thanks.

I am still dwelling on what SloppyPainter said about shields on each hand. Thinking of having Moria Goblin-like shields on both hands, to use offensively and defensively.

Imagine a smaller version of these shields on each of their hands:

I think the Rebel Minis Greys figures lend themselves to that addition, don't you think?

Yeah, adding hand-shields to the Rebel Minis Greys would make them look like they were attacking with them.

Sloppypainter18 Apr 2009 11:57 a.m. PST

Spiked shields would be nasty weapons.

Cacique Caribe18 Apr 2009 1:34 p.m. PST

Sloppy, you did kinda give me the idea! That and looking at a picture of a Moria Goblin.

Imagine the Greys lurking among ruins like these:

From another interesting and more recent thread:

Twisted Metal: "I kind of like the idea in many of Alastair Reynolds' books, that humans are expanding into an otherwise dead galaxy, encountering nothing but the ruins and artifacts of long-dead civilisations …"

28mmMan: "I really like the idea of a long dormant galaxy. We explore, find lots of evidence, long gone and dusty."

I did not use GREYS as post apocolyptic alien survivors, i used HERITAGE MODELS (i think they were HERITAGE) 25mm wingless gargoyles from one of their fantasy lines .

i armed them with stone tipped spears, axes, knives, and coup de splat clubs, and used these to populated my FORERUNNER world.

i used some epoxy ribbon to make some bad smelling, "hairy pancakes" (about the size of a US dime) to represent another type of lurking alien inhabiting an abandoned FORERUNNER fleet base on a desert world. these being had become completely feral, and were possiblly the mutated descendents of the fleet base personnel.

i also had some working FOREUNNER tech scattered about the base in the form of robots and such that generally ignored my EARTH explorers unless they were assigned to a base security mission (and then they were implacable, deadly enemies).

i used some "mermen" (actually more like CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) to represent retrogressed sentients on another planet and gave them primitive weaponry as well.

i also used a number of KREIGSPEILER cave trolls and some other near nakes from various ancient lines to make humanoid "cavemen" for another FOREUNNER world.

and i used my ever-popular one eyed, rubbery limbed, spandex wearing aliens (known as BOOBAKS in the DFW) and the naked (wy would an ent need clothes?) ent-like aliens (known locally as GNARLIES) as high tech FORERUN – NER survivors on a couple of other worlds. these were from a sci fi line that had powered armor human troops similar to those in JOE HALDEMAN'S "FOREVER WAR". came out in the 1970s and i think the line was called GALAXIANS by GRENADIER MODELS.

KREIGSPEILER snaga orcs and goblins populated another planet.

long out of production MINIFIG-USA itty bitty kolbolds were used on another wrecked FORERUNNER world as survivors.

and i used HINCHLIFFE BARSOOM figures for another FOREUNNER world that had not devolved as far as some of the others after the FORERUNNER WAR.

i used different poker chips to represent the KRELL id monster prowling about the perimeter of the EARTH explorer's landing site and bingo discs to represent the invisible alien energy life forms that fed on life forces on a fog shrouded world.

i also used a number of other fantasy and CHULHU critters from various companies and dimestore toys for alien wildlife on various planets.

YES, ALICE MARY NORTON was (and still is) one of my favorite sci fi writers.
<:O)

yes, i did and still do use books, tv, movies, video games and even comics to provide myself with scenario ideas. <:O)

I'd do an animal hide and/or wicker frame. Another idea would be shells or bones. (think turtle shells or dino bones)

Don't laugh, but I'm also considering these guys for that setting:
