Well, I've been doing some research, thanks to the many great folks here, for rules that I might like for some modern gaming I'd like to do.

I'm going 6mm. I'm trying to stay away from rules that really bog play down. I know there are rules out that accurately describe how a shell hits, muzzle velocity, angle of armor…etc. That's too much for me :)

I'm looking at Fist Full of Tows2, Ambush Alley, Cold War Commander and the Lock and Load World at War series.

I may be asking for a lot here, but can anyone give advice/opinions as to which they like the best? Which of these rules offer the best "simulation" if at all.

Thanks…the research continues :)

Forgot to add…..Looking for Company and larger size fights.

I have only played Ambush Alley so cannot give you a very objective view but I do know that a regular contributor uses AA for military simulation in training.
See: link
I haven't played at company level but I gather that others have (particularly Force on Force) and it works fine, just takes a little longer.

I dont follow the Medieval link? Is this a time travel thing – some sort of "Guns of the South" but with Abrams and Challengers fighting off the T-80's as they come ashore near Hastings?

Company level is really the maximum for AA/FoF. If you want company and larger (several battalions) I'd go Cold War Commander. I play 1 stand per platoon (3-5 vehicles/30-40 inf) but you can play 1:1. Doesn't work for me but others like it.

I assume it's a mistaken crossposting…

He was probably trying to post a link to something Dave from MilSims posted about using AA for military training. AA's also been used by at least three US military units as a barracks training tool.

We have players who play Ambush Alley in 6mm and enjoy it. AA is focused on regular vs insurgent combat, though, so if you're interested in regular vs regular forces, you might want to check out Force on Force.

Please feel free to join our forum at ambushalleygames.com/forum and ask for input from players there – they can share their experiences with you, which is probably going to be more convincing than having the guy who helped design the games tell you how great they are! ;)

Apart from the rules listed in the original post, Modern Spearhead is another option that appears to meet the specified critieria and gives a fast-paced uncomplicated game. There is a new version (3.0) of Fistful of Tows due "any day now" so it may be better to hold off for them than buy FFT2. There is not much to choose between MSH and FFT – the latter goes for a 'fistful of dice' concept with weapons having rates of fire measured in number of dice thrown, whereas the former has a single dice rolled to resolve most fire. They both use the one stand=one platoon ratio, as does Cold War Commander. My personal beef with CWC is the absence of a sufficiently rigourous spotting rule to meet my taste in terms of simulation – yours may differ.
Any of these will allow you to play a good game in a reasonable timeframe using a force larger than company size (I wouldn't recommend any of them to fight a one company versus one company action).
