I've just got my first rules and ships for the Dreadnaught period and I must admit to knowing very little about naval combat in this era. What books out there can you recommend for a newbie?

All I want to start is an overview to give a feel for it but knowing how I operate I'll probably want to get into more detail once I have that feel.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Castles of Steel

Dreadnought

Castles of Steel is WWI specific, dreadnought is about the naval arms race leading up to the war.

The Osprey books on German/English Battelcruisers are decent for Osprey books.

Also there are several good websites:

For the Hochseeflotte

gwpda.org
Great War primary document archive. The Naval section is fantastic!

dreadnoughtproject.org
the Dreadnought project has good docs on systems and a forum.

worldwar1.co.uk
World War 1 .co.uk good primer material and ship info

Read Scheers book and Jellicos dispatches.

I would definitely second Castles of Steel as a good overview of the period. In addition I would recommend Jutland 1916 – Death in the Grey Wastes

The Blooding of the Guns (a fictional retelling of the battle incorporating a lot of actual experiences from people who were there) is an inspirational read for getting into the period as well.

That's Castles of Steel ordered. Thanks for your suggestions.
