Thanks for including pix of the vendors as well. Similar pictorial reports often neglect the vendors. |

WOW! Thanks for taking the photos and sharing! I am very impressed with the quality of the gaming tabletops and the vendor booth displays. Our East cons here in the USA might be bigger in numbers only, but the UK still sets the standard for quality we should strive for. Larry |

Excellent photoreport I'll join the others by nitpicking though sorry. On page 1 you have a photo labelled as our stand,, when it's SMG's stand :) (Our stand seemed to be camera shy for the day ;) ) |
John Treadaway | 30 Mar 2009 8:32 a.m. PST |
Larry I think that the differences between US and UK shows (from evidence I've only read about, you understand, having never been to one in the US but having been to ones in the UK and Europe)) are: a) a higher proportion of demonstration games at UK shows: although Salute has a high proportion of party games – usually over 50% – I understand that it's still way short of participation games to demo games ratios at conventions in the states. I would imagine that's because
b) pretty much everything in the states (becasue of travel distances and cheaper hall hire) is a multi day long week end
am I right in assuming that? Almost no one sane want's to just demo a game for days and days! Most everything in UK (and shows like Crisis in Antwerp) are one day or – at most – two day shows. c) Am I right in saying that participation games in the US are often Pay to Play? Whilst I'm not saying that never happens in the UK, I've only seen it occasionally. That economic factor might bring out a different dynamic, I guess. Perhaps 'look and feel' for a game are rationalised by the 'can we get enough money back' factor
I don't know about that last point but I'd be interested in what anyone in the states thinks. As for numbers, I've no idea how many gamers were at Salute this year, as conventioneers and paying public all added up. But its best year, with those two combined, Salute might have been somewhere between 5000 and 6000, though it varies year on year. John T |

Black Cat Bases | 30 Mar 2009 10:58 a.m. PST |
Hi, Thanks Rees I was going to say the same pics, 36 and 37 are BLACK CAT BASES as the overhead sign in 36 says and not BLACK HAT MINITURES (Black Hat is a great range though and Mike who runs it is lovely so no complaints at the association! :) ) Also 159 is our game and it is DODO racing NOT DUCK racing, so yes you were kidding but I am not!!!:) Completely understandable mistakes at that number of photo's and thanks for sharing them! I've seen more of Salute today than I did on the day!!! Jo:) |

Hastati, Thanks for the kind words on the Roman V Sassanid game! Meet and Greet is what we do. Its our thing at shows to try and do something a little different (28mm Warmaster this time round) and get people talking about it. Our terrain is governed by lack of storage and so we can't go down the purpose built/show standard road but try a show what can be done on a budget if you put your mind to it. Most of the time we feel it stands up pretty well against a lot of the 'turn up and play something' demo games, as opposed to those where Clubs put hours and hours of work in and then take it 'on tour'. All the figures on show were the work of one person (not me I hasten to add) and we think his consistant style adds to the overall effct. |

I was amused to see the 3D version of "Awful Green Things From Outer Space." The board game upon which it is based (originally published by TSR) was designed by my friend and former employee, Tom Wham! I wonder if he knows it has been done as a miniatures game. |

Only fees at the US HMGS Cons are a nominal entry fee for the hall/hotel ($10/day or $30/3 days). Individual events are free at HMGS events. The largest HMGS show (Historicon) has around 5-6M attendees. Very similar attendance to Salute. However there are as many as 600 games held during the 3 days of the Con. TRU |

Am I the only one that finds it interesting that when we see human beings in these pictures maybe 90% of them are either Grey-haired or balding? Perhaps 'the greying of the hobby' isn't as much of a myth as we thought

Absoulutely fabulous photo set. Joe, would you mind if I uploaded and stored the photos of the Hordes!-participation table (i.e. Salute_2009370-73)on my site? I'm the one who made the table in question, but my photos of the completed thing turned out horribly. You would of course be cited as the photographer. |
