And so, the Parthians took their revenge. It was a bitter moment: link JET |

A very interesting battle report with great pictures. How long did the game take to play (realizing that you were taking pictures etc.)? |

Very nice! Thanks for the report! |

I'd say we were playing for about two hours, including pictures. It was our first 500 point game, and there were a few pensive moments. I spend so much time praising this game, Lorenzo should have me on salary ;) |

Entertaining report. Impetus has refreshed my interest in big battles for ancients/medievals. |

Have you read the novel "Winter Quarters" by Alfred Duggan? It gives a view of Crassus' Parthian campaign, from the viewpoint of one of the Gallic Auxilliary cavalry. Well worth the read, as are all his books (some out of print, but others recently reprinted). Likes the figures a lot,but thought the two sides had much better than average force mixes. (Too many cataphracs for the Parthians, and too much cavalry and light troops for the Romans), still it appeared to give and enjoyable game, which is most important. Thanks Paul F |

but thought the two sides had much better than average force mixes Certainly true. However, we use the points system to construct our armies, and aren't trying to recreate any particular campaign or engagement. As you said, the enjoyment is concern number one for us. |

Wonder what would have happened HAD you remained patient? Maybe you could game that out and see what the Parthian Cataphracts et al would do? Also might give some idea of the mechanics of Impetus in this situation? Would you simply be trading opportunity fire/charges? |

Not to criticize at all since my photo-management skills are significant only compared to my undeveloped photographic ones (the photographs look good so I suspect yours are much better), but overlaying some text or markings can greatly increase understanding of what's going on – both tactical and rules interactions – both for experienced and new players. As an example of a style I like, photo battle report examples from Neil Hammond (approach would carry over directly in Impetus): link link It doesn't need to be that elaborate. Even simple move arrows and labels added to the deployment photo can articulate the situation: link I think people viewing detailed Impetus photo battle reports could quickly get an idea of the flow of the game and tactics and how they differ from other rules. One thing that is very NOT obvious from photo and battle reports is how much action, even back and forth combat, can occur in a single activation due to the retreat/pursuit mechanism. |
