I recently picked it up off of RPGNow ( link )

I liked it so much I bought Zeta Plus. I love how it handles character creation and supports pretty much anything mechanical in terms of design and game play. And having it translate easily between Hex and Terrain is a plus.

In terms of Anime RPGs (And most Sci-fi) it's my favorite.

Now if only I could get my friends interested enough in it (and RPing in general)…

Cilidar25 Mar 2009 8:37 p.m. PST

Also, some of you might recognize it as a sister to CYBERPUNK as it shares the same system.

wolvermonkey25 Mar 2009 9:10 p.m. PST

Maybe you can get them hooked with the mech combat first. Then add the RPG stuff as you go. They did have some nice minis for it too.

Cilidar25 Mar 2009 9:15 p.m. PST

Yeah, I haven't been able to find any of their minis, I think they've been out of production for a long while :(.
I have plenty of Battletech and EM4 Steel Warriors that would do the trick.

I'm also planning on picking up some Evangelion and Gundam gashapon sometime in the future. For machine with a more Anime feel I thought about some Heavy Gear lines but they're pricey.

Though it still will be a little tough as most of my friends aren't into none video games that much. Though, they're resistance is weakening… Feel the power of the darkside!!! >:D

If you are interested in some of the Mekton figures – I have about half a dozen of them – perhaps more – in boxes, some primed, others still NIB. If you are interested email me at belisaurius1 at yahoo dot com.

Thundertotem25 Mar 2009 9:56 p.m. PST

I lost my rule books for Mekton Z (I had all of them), I loved the rule system. I still have a ton of the minis still.

Space Monkey25 Mar 2009 10:07 p.m. PST

The Mekton stuff always gets top billing in any discussion of Mecha games.
The only Mecha RPG I've read is GURPS Mecha… I'd like to read another, just to see how stuff is done differently (I'm pretty happy with GURPS).

I have a bunch of the old Mekton minis too… though they mostly see use with 6mm wargames.

Cilidar25 Mar 2009 10:42 p.m. PST

Jovian1, I sent you an email regarding purchase of you minis. I forgot to include I could trade as well, I have quite a few of LOTR and Warhammer Fantasy figures my friend had found at a dump (I don't no why someone left them there, they're all in great shape!)
They include:
Warhammer Fantasy:
1 A battalion of High Elven Archers (Minus one elf, lack of torso.)
2 What appears to be some sort of dark elf or Vampire lord and mount
3. What appears to be a Gretchen Ballista Team
4. A possible Ork Command Squad (All metal: Drummer, One soldier, Banner-Carrier, and Warboss(?).
LOTR:
1 An Uruk-Kai Sqaud
2 Aragorn
3 Gimli
4 Boromir

This also goes for anyone willing to part with Mekton minis, other Giant Robots, or Spaceships ^-^

We've used Mekton Zeta/Zeta Plus for Gundam, Escaflowne, Godzilla and even "D&D"-type RPGs. The combat rules can stand alone as a wargame and the RPG rules are pretty good – which can be purchased separately as the Fuzion Core Book link

venusboys3, for you I'd recommend BESM. The guy who wrote their mecha system is the same guy who wrote GURPS Mecha. Word has it he's into cat girls.

Tgunner26 Mar 2009 7:56 a.m. PST

Yeah, Mekton is an excellent system. You should grab the other supplements for the game. There are two books that give more details and wargames scenarios for the Invasion Terra setting. They are well worth getting. One of those two books has a mass battle system that looks like a winner. Each unit is either a captial ship unit or a squadron of mecha. The scale can be moved around so that each 'unit' can be just a few mecha or a single cap ship all the way to each 'unit' being whole fleets. You can have some real epic games with this!

On the whole, Mekton is the best game out there for giant robots. It's a shame that it never caught on like Battletech… Lord knows the game system is far better and you can really go to town making mecha.

I have Mekton Empire but I hadn't realized it was written for Mekton II and not Zeta. Still, I love the way you set up the campaign with choose your own background options :D . Plus, I thought the starship rules were really interesting though I didn't need them as I had both Zeta and Zeta Plus.

For Mass combat I was thinking Full Thrust with Starships and maybe some of GZGs Mecha Squadrons. Though, sounds like a Mekton supplement would do it in a lot more Anime way! (Speaking of which I found the SDF Macross here for like $7!!! hlj.com/product/BAN953442 ) >:D Its in robot mode but I think for that price you could also buy another and kitbash to make it look like ship mode as well.

Of course you alternately buy the $150 USD one and have it come larger and transformable hlj.com/product/WAVMC-42 :p

Way back when (late 80s) I ran a space fleet fight using the "big fight" rules in Mekton II. It almost worked, but I didn't need to repeat it, so I've never gone back and revisited those mechanics for tweaking.

Tgunner26 Mar 2009 12:19 p.m. PST

This is the product I was thinking about:

It is way different from Mekton Empire! Mekton itself has the rules to make cap ships, however it doesn't have rules to handle mass battles.

The rules are called Mekton Fleet Battles and you'll find them in this book on page 47 (?).

These are totally different from the cap ship rules in the Empire book. These are mass battle rules that allow you to field huge fleets of ships and mecha. You can really get silly with this rules set. It uses the regular Mekton Z rules, but it crunches the scale and allows you to field fleets of cap ships, full wings of mecha, and squadrons of lighter warships.

We're talking about running mass battles like from Star Wars, Gundam, and Robotech and other sci-fi shows.

Heck, back in the 90's I ran a "Battle of the Belt" (from the old TV show Space: Above and Beyond) where we had massed squadrons of fighters (Hammerheads and Chigs) swarming around two fair sized task forces (we had like 4 Kennedy Class Carriers going toe to toe with 3 Chig Hive Ships). The rules worked great! That's just a small taste of what Mekton Fleet Battles can do.

Yeah, Invasion Terra is next on my list followed by Starblade Battalion. I hadn't known that it had massed space battle rules until you posted up the list! Thanks for the info! Now to either brainwash my friends or clone some new ones (Where is some Zentradi tech when you need some… Then again, If I had that kind of technology I would be living it and taking over the world!) Today, the third rock from the Sun. Tomorrow the UNIVERSE!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Tgunner26 Mar 2009 2:00 p.m. PST

The Mekton Fleet Battles rules are part of one of the scenarios in the book. In the battle, a mixture of Terran warships are launching a massed assault on the Imperial fleet above Earth. IIRC, you have something like 20+ Terran cap ships escorted by dozens of corvettes going toe-to-toe with a powerful Imperial fleet with at least one super-capital flagship.

There is another book for the Invasion Terra setting that is worth getting too: Mekton Manual 2. It has a nice selection of mecha and captial ships for both forces. Heck, it even has profiles for generic soldiers for both sides too. Finally, it has loads of fluff tucked into the descriptions of the mecha and ships. Plenty of additional materials to enjoy if you like the setting. It also has a big wargaming scenario that covers the last battle of the war too.

Yeah, Mekton Zeta totally rocks. It is a great RPG system the easily turns into a fun table top game. It is hex oriented, but it has suggestions on how to go tabletop with miniatures. Its only real downside is that it doesn't have decent infantry rules. Infantry are just characters that are running around underfoot which can be kind of messy. However there are a couple of fun infantry vs. mecha scenarios in the Mekton Wars book.

Anyway, have fun with it! And if you're in Baltimore look me up and I'll play you.

Tgunner26 Mar 2009 2:03 p.m. PST

Go here and you can buy physical copies of the books.

Sounds good though live clear on the other side of the States ;).

"Go here and you can buy physical copies of the books."
I've recently taken a love to E-books and I have a pretty swell printer but thanks anyway! :D

Say… It there a part of the forum here that we could to Play-By-Post???

RobH26 Mar 2009 2:55 p.m. PST

cilidar, I have some of the minis if you are looking, email me at rbrthprAThotmailDOTcom. I will trade these no problem.

Sargonarhes26 Mar 2009 3:05 p.m. PST

I've played with the rules and system a few times, can't get very many people interested in it. When it comes to mecha or sci-fi they'd rather play the quick start up games. But I like Mekton's style as DP9 started Jovian Chronicles under Mekton's system. You can even see where DP9 adapted some things and changed them for SilCore.

Cilidar26 Mar 2009 3:30 p.m. PST

@RobH

I'm currently working on a deal with Jovian1 so he has any first dibs on my trade-able minis. If you would like to make a deal though, go ahead and head here and have a look at what I have to trade and make your offer. TMP link
