This time the battle report has slightly better quality photos, taken by my unskilled hand, but from a real camera.

Looks like fun. Really nicely painted armies. I think you could use a bit more terrain on the table though.

Best bit was this innocent little line…"they are rundown and slaughtered by the miners….."
as if…the idea of a Dwarf being able to outrun a fleeing goblin….preposterous! ;)

Excellent blog and minis. I also like the points totals. Kind of tired of trying to field a kabillion points of stuff.

Awwwww, the poor li'l goblins.

Good report and nice pictures. Coincidentally, I have just today finished a big unit of those little goblin archers. Now they are demanding a cave troll before they go play with the dwarves.

Yeah, those goblins, Night Goblins especially, have such abysmal morale that it is tough to put up a serious fight against anything without Orcs to stiffen them.

In the last battle we used a bit more terrain, and we positioned it RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the field. I think as a result we both wanted a more clear field this time. I currently have three stands of trees, two hills, and a fence. It was all on the table in this game, but it was not near the middle of field, and most of the combat took place away from it. (I may add a building or two to this mix as well.)

I am planning to add an Orc Lord level character to the Orcs and Goblins Army as well as at least 1 full unit of Orcs. I haven't totally decided what I will add to the dwarfs, likely either Slayers, Ironbreakers or Quarrelers.

The game plays pretty well in the space I have at 1000 points. I think it would probably be a bit better with 1500 or so, and that is to be my final goal. I intend to work a few 40k armies up to 1000 points before I get back to the Fantasy, though. (Incidentally, you can expect another story on the blog in a couple weeks once we've had our first game.)

goblins don't need any lousy orcs! Just bring as many fanatics and squigs as you can. Then toss your nets in close combat, while you characters cause the casualties.

Oh, and a giant always helps.

phobia, what are those, about 750-point armies? Looks like a fun time.

RobH: I think you could use a bit more terrain on the table though.
Actually that looks like a fairly standard WHFB table. I count 2 woods and 2 hills. There's a line of fence that looks to be 24" so it's the size of 2 pieces; granted that's off to one side so as not to interfere in the game (placing terrain this way is allowed by the rules). So that's 4 pieces or 6 if you count the fence. It looks to be a 4x6' table.

7th edition WHFB recommends 3-4 terrain pieces on a 4x4' table for up to 1000 points, and 4-6 pieces on a 4x6' table for 1000-3000 points. Also the 24" circle in the center of the table is supposed to be clear.

Now I personally find games more tactical with more terrain than that, but my point is, phobia's game looks about par.

The table is slightly shorter than 6' ( probably around 5', mostly because of the rounded ends) and slightly more narrow than 4'(about 3' 8" I'd say). This is plenty big enough for the 1000 point battles and I think it would work fine up to around 2000 assuming that some of those points were used to bulk out existing units rather than increase the number of units.

Since both armies belong to me, and I also collect miniatures for a few other games, the armies tend to grow pretty slowly. The list for this most recent battle was the same list as the last, except I changed some of the gobbo magic items and added the Spear Chukka. (I try to add a new unit to one side or the other for each battle. Thus, each one will likely have a slightly different list than the time before it.)

For the 1/24/2009 battle we took turns placing, per the rules, a total of 2 hills and 3 stands of trees (two were right next to each other.) The fence and the gobbo hut were not "placed" we added them in out of the way spots just to spice up the pictures.

Very often though, we run the games with the fence (it is in 6 sections, but we place 3 sections as one choice), hills and trees hogging up all kinds of room on the field.

I intend to add one or two more items (buildings, probably) and I think that would be more than enough choices for a table that size.
