Ran across this while leafing through TNR – A four page spread (with a nice photo of the Cylorama) discussing the ongoing efforts to restore the battlefield.

Ain't passing judgement on it, just pointing it out for y'all. I was surprised to see the subject printed anywhere besides either TMP or Civil War Times.

I wondered, after reading the article, if the gentleman saw any point in preserving battlefields at all. What is the point, if not to keep the field in something like its historical configuration?

I read most of the article and the responses. Most of the responses agreed with my thinking! But Wow, a couple of them are in another world. Anyone that doesn't get it now, will never get it. Save a tree and the world will be a better place. I should shut up. I'm all for preserving our environment, but a lot of people have been brainwashed already. They don't have all the information and they just don't get it! I'm done.

Some years ago I went to Vicksburg. Most of the works are overgrown and it's difficult to get the feel of the site with all the trees.

Talking to one of the rangers about this is a issue that the NPS takes seriously and are conflicted about and do try to handle in a sensative manner.
