I'm in the process of painting some 1/1200th scale Ancient Naval minis(Romans),and i need some help.

Several of my ships will have colored stripes in Blue or Red but i also want designs on some of the sails.

First off i need to know if 10mm Ancient Shield designs are what i need for my sails.

For example i'd like to get designs like Rams Head and Bulls head, and other similar designs.

Any help would be grateful.

Can I just point out that all ancient warships (of ram type) unstepped their masts and left them ashore during combat. The sudden stop during ramming tended to bring the mast down with disastrous consequences otherwise. Non ram types and merchantmen are no problem.

Yes you're right but all my minis have sail's and i intend to use them.

One reason that i use the sails is for identification i mean if all the ships on both sides all looked the same then how can you know which ship did it's action.

With each ship having a sail with a different color pattern or design, then it's very easy to identify and also they look nice to.

And if you saw Ben Hur the large Fleet action between the Romans and pirates the ships had their sails up during the battle even when they rammed other ships.

And here's another question IF the bulk of the warships had ramming ability, then WHY would the mini's come with sails in the first place???

Because they look nice and perhaps since most folks equate reality to what they have seen in the movies, they expect them…

Ben Hur? Fiction mate, in every way

Captain Gideon14 Mar 2009 10:46 a.m. PST

I know it's fiction but to me it looked good.

And as i said before if these ships ARE'NT supposed to have sails in battle then WHY did they give them sails with the mini's?

Most if not all the ships i have are capable of ramming so why would they provide sails with them,if they're NOT used in combat?

It's a very simple question that i ask which is i need designs for my sails, now can anyone help me out here???

Does anyone really know what the designs looked like ? Seems to me you can do whatever pleases you, Captain G.

"And as i said before if these ships ARE'NT supposed to have sails in battle then WHY did they give them sails with the mini's?"

Because the manuacturers didn't know any better, and just worked off artists impressions, or wanted to give players the option of modellig the ships with the sails that they'd use inntransit?

Same reason you see manufacturers produce Prussian Grenadier standard bearers (smile).

As for the designs on the sails it's anybody's guess CorporalTrim, which is why i want to use Greek Shield Designs.

But like i said i need to find some Shield designs in either 15mm or 10mm,that'll fit on the sails.

For me the more simple the better i mean for example a Rams Head or a cup or fish.

So if someone can point me in the direction of a manufacturer that makes Greek Shield Designs in 15mm or 10mm.

You can get decals like this from Little Big Men ….

Try under 10mm/Xyston/Greek Hoplite.

There are several other designs like that in his shop.
