I was just wondering…

There has been a few posts lately regarding the new Star Trek movie. Then a few years ago there was a lot of buzz over Revenge of the Sith. Stargate, Babylon 5 and Battle Star Galactica pops up often enough to mention.

Out of all the ones out there, which movie/show are you the most fond of? OR wish/have gamed if you had the figs?

I am a big Star Wars fan, and have gamed out the battle of Courasant using the Silent Death rules. The Separatists won that time…

Guys in my club are fans of Flash Gordon, so we are concocting a mission for War Rocket.

Most Sci-Fi shows on TV are pretty lousy, but I still have a soft spot for Blakes 7. Hyperdrive is good for a laugh.

Movies, I guess the obvious one, Star Wars – Empire Strikes Back. A much better film is Alien, but it isn't the kind of thing you can watch over and over, unlike bubble gum like SW. 'The Day the Earth Caught Fire' is also still quite powerful, especially the ambiguous ending. Terminator II has a place in my heart. OK, top five:

SWESB
Alien
Terminator II
Dark Star
Quatermass and the Pit

Serenty
babalyon 5
BSG
Farscape
Terminator
Aliens
Star wars

Been watching BattleStar Galactica pretty regularly. I'm a Trek fan but really couldn't get behind Enterprise. I'm looking forward to the new movie. And Dr Who is not to be missed.

John D Salt12 Mar 2009 1:34 p.m. PST

Serenity, definitely.

If we're allowed films, Firefly, obviously, then Barbarella, and The Fifth Element.

And can we have comic books? Because then Valerian, Halo Jones, Skizz, and D.R. & Quinch.

All the best,

John.

lodoss12 Mar 2009 1:40 p.m. PST

Do not forgett Red Dwarf.

Top Gun Ace12 Mar 2009 1:55 p.m. PST

Still love UFO, by Gerry Anderson.

mattblackgod12 Mar 2009 2:18 p.m. PST

Firefly/Serenity, Red Dwarf, the Fifth element, alien/aliens.

Twisted Metal12 Mar 2009 2:37 p.m. PST

Stargate Atlantis – it's about the only show I watch at the moment. Recently been re-watching DS9 and Babylon 5 boxsets since most newer programmes leave me cold.

evilcartoonist12 Mar 2009 2:37 p.m. PST

Firefly
Enterprise
Classic Star Trek (remastered- makes it easier for me to watch.)
Star Trek Next Gen.
Does Quantum Leap count?
What about Brisco County Jr.?
Well I like both of those shows too.

mweaver12 Mar 2009 2:40 p.m. PST

Firefly/Serenity. Although more for role-playing than mini games, although it would lend itself nicely for skirmish gaming

Star Trek next. I used to be a big fan of Star Fleet Battles, but finally grew tired of the perpetual rules changes (and the fact that tractor beams became even more deadly than most main weapon systems).

The Road Warrior films – great inspiration for post-Apocalypse gaming.

Babylon 5 would be good for gaming, although I never became a huge fan of the series (a lot of the actors were weak or seemed miscast to me).

After those horrible prequels, I generally avoid anything Star Wars these days.

Space Monkey12 Mar 2009 2:41 p.m. PST

Lexx
Sapphire and Steel
Firefly
Old Twilight Zone and Outer Limits

Grape Ape12 Mar 2009 2:53 p.m. PST

For wargaming inspiration purposes, Babylon 5 was my number one. For general SF, I thought the New Outer Limits was excellent and very underrated.

Lord Hypnogogue12 Mar 2009 3:17 p.m. PST

Firefly/Serenity
Twilight Zone
Outer Limits.

Only Warlock12 Mar 2009 3:21 p.m. PST

Bab5
Firefly
Space Above and Beyond
Star Trek TOS

religon12 Mar 2009 3:30 p.m. PST

Great Movies: Star Wars, Xena, Red Dwarf.

Honorable Mentions: _new_ Dr. Who, Alien (1 and 2), Terminator, Gladiator, Star Trek (Kirk as Cpt.), and LOTR movies.

For gaming Star Wars and LOTR are great.
May buy Ground Zero Xena figures next month.
I don't think I would game any of the others.

Rudysnelson12 Mar 2009 3:32 p.m. PST

I too like most SciFi shows which do not include Horror. Picking one? I have the most autographs from babylon Five stars. Farscape would be next.

Cosmic Reset12 Mar 2009 4:01 p.m. PST

The Sci-fi TV show that I'd most like to game is Firefly, movie is Fith Element.

DalyDR12 Mar 2009 4:01 p.m. PST

Aliens.

Dave

Augustus12 Mar 2009 5:32 p.m. PST

STAR WARS Trilogy (not the prequels)
Babylon 5
Batman/Batman Beyond (animated shows 1990's – superb writing/art)
BLADE RUNNER film
Road Warrior films
ALIENS films
SOLDIER film

Katzbalger12 Mar 2009 6:40 p.m. PST

Aliens
Babylon 5
Serenity/Firefly
The Empire Strikes Back
Battlestar Galactica (the original series)
Roughneck Chronicles (the CGI series)

Briscoe County Jr is great, and I'm glad evilcartoonist mentioned it--I hadn't thought of it as sci fi, but by golly it is!

I wish someone would take the Hammer's Slammers books and make a series out of them.

Rob

Gallowglass12 Mar 2009 8:41 p.m. PST

Firefly/Serenity
Red Dwarf
Alien/Aliens. (no other movies in this "universe" were EVER made, okay?)
Bab 5
BSG – the new one. What I've seen of it.
And Star Wars. Same disclaimer as per Aliens.

Rogzombie Fezian12 Mar 2009 9:48 p.m. PST

Resident evil 3 and Ghosts of Mars, that sort of thing.
Blasting zombies with high tech weaponry.

BigLee13 Mar 2009 1:40 a.m. PST

What shows would I like to game?… the answer would be different depending on what type of game I wanted to play.

Skirmish Wargame – Alien 2
Wargame – Star Wars – Battle of Hoth
Roleplay – Firefly

From a wargaming POV it would be "Space: Above and Beyond" and Star Trek DS9 (4th season onwards).

Cheers,

Burkhard

Paul Hurst13 Mar 2009 3:01 a.m. PST

I enjoy watching re-runs of Space 1999.

Warbeads14 Mar 2009 6:56 a.m. PST

None.

I don't watch TV and I attend Movies less then four times a year (more likely zero or 1 unless the family wants to see something like the LOTR movies or the Harry Potter movies.)

We annually do watch all three extended versions of LOTR over the 3 days during New Year's Holiday. But that's more Fantasy than Sci-Fi.

Fanatic? Well, I have 5 copies (after one died on two of 3 disks – kid use/abuse) of with 1 and 2/3 are still in shrinkwrap. They're backups…and one set for each kid when they move out of the house. I still prefer the books.

Gracias,

Glenn

Which series had the best spaceship fleet battle scenes?

GypsyComet14 Mar 2009 11:53 a.m. PST

Fleet scenes are pretty rare in live action SF. One reason is expense, the other is focus. If the camera is watching the ships, it isn't watching the characters.

Series and movies for fleet scenes include Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith (opening), Babylon 5 ("kick your asses all the way back to Earth!" at the end of Season 4), and Star Trek: First Contact (beginning).

Fleet operations that (may) feature getting shot at but aren't "traditional" battle scenes include Starship Troopers, both iterations of Battlestar Galactica, and The Empire Strikes Back.

I suspect there are a couple lop-sided fleet scenes in Farscape, but I haven't managed to see enough of it yet.

On the animation (including anime) side, fleets get easier to depict. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the classic in this regard, but most of the Space Cruiser Yamato series and at least one of the Captain Harlock shows do fleets. Also Macross (in just about every one of its variants), Banner of the Stars, Gal Force, Gunbuster (the first, not sure about the much later sequel). A brief bit of Southern Cross (the show that became the middle of Robotech) has some fleet action. The one that may escape notice because it features "airship" fleets is Last Exile.
