Gents, my 28mm BH Saxons have arrived, rather nice so need some more! I have info on uniforms (They are in soft hat) and a description in the Osprey book of the Flag. Does anyone know where I might see a plate/picture of the flags, or even if any are available? many thanks, Tally Ho! Nick |

Superb stuff, and Wurtenburg flags too, time to convert some Foundry blokes to carry flags! Many thanks, Nick |

Who are BH? Do they do a complete FPW 28mm range? |
| nickinsomerset | 09 Mar 2009 2:02 p.m. PST |
Battle Honours, in the UK available from Timecast. The range is small, French, Austrians and Saxons the latter either attacking or firing in soft caps. Nice figures compatable with Foundry in size, useful to knock up a couple of Regiments (24 figs incl Offr, Drummer and Standard bearer)- 5 bags gives enough figures for a TDfG Saxon Bde. Tally Ho! |

Nick, WARFLAG is a great service, and its Napoleonic stuff is superb, but I am afraid the German FPW stuff is not to the same standard. All four of the designs: Hesse Darmstadt, Wurttemburg, Baden and Saxony are wrong, although at least the Wurttemburg ones have the right idea with a coat of arms on a red background (but only for one side). In a smaller scale (6mm) Baccus have an accurate representation of Saxon and Wurttemburg, Baden and Hessian flags. The subject is extremely esoteric I am afraid! The only source I know which is in print is in German, and contains colour photographs of all the Sxon flags for 1871, which still exist in the German Army Museum in Dresden. I can post its details if you are interested. But from a practical point of view I can offer you a slightly easier solution. Each Saxon Regiment in 1870 had 3 Battalions, and 3 flags (Except the Schutzen regiment No109 which did not carry flags and the 2 jager battalions. Each 1st battalion carried a Liebfahne white, with the Saxon arms on the obverse and a star of a military order on the reverse. Apart from the Baccus I know of only one easily accessible picture of this flag (more later). The other two battalions carried green flags,to a design very similar to the one carried by the Saxon infantry between 1811 and 1815. If on WARFLAG you go into NAPFLAGs, and then Saxony, anf then Infantry 1811-1815, the ones for regiments Prinz Friedrich August and von Low are pretty good representations of these flags. With one important exception. They have the obverse and reverse the wrong way around. The Saxon arms should be on the right, the mongrammed shield on the left. The above referred book shows photographs of two examples of this Napoleonic pattern, and these are clearly reversed compared to the NAPFLAG example. With a little bit of cutting, these examples should provide flags for most of your battalions. Now, onto the other source for the Leibfahne. There is a fantastic German site from which all sorts of books and Cds can be bought on military subjects. It is historischer-bilderdienst.de Along the left hand side of the page click the button "Fahnen Flaggen und Standarten" A page will then appear listing the books etc they offer on flags. The third one down covers Saxon flags. Click on it and scroll to the bottom and a colour illustration from the book appears. Click on it and the illustration enlarges. In the bottom left hand corner is a picture of a Leibfahne. You can also see some of the other green flags illustrate. Good Luck! Andrew/ Mollinary |

Thanks Andrew!!!! I thought all my problems had been solved nice and simply then along you came with all that, making life so complex! Looks like I will spend some time at the computer now I have saved those links, many thanks, Nick |

Nick, Sorry to make life complex, but this particular topic was something of a personal journey for me when I first got some 10mm 1866 Saxons about 5 or 6 years ago. I also could find nothing about their flags so I sent off a speculative e-mail to the Army Museum in Dresden. I got a really helpful reply (in perfect English) together with an offer to show me what they had in store. I was taken behind the scenes and managed to view the originals of both types of flag, together with some of the Napoleonic Cavalry standards. Sadly none of them are on display! This all ignited a latent interest in flags, and since then I have become something of a megageek on the subject of late 19th century German flags. Still, I think there are probably worse things to be! Hope you get those Saxons in action soon. Andrew |

Andrew, for complex read interesting, in a way! The Saxons arrived yesterday, not bad figures allthough I will need a few more bags to create a Bde. Having just painted 120 Helion and Co Prussians I am bored of Dark Blue and Grey so am going to do some French Line and Zuoaves – Dark Blue and red! Cheers, Nick |

Nick Can't find the BH 28mm's on Timecast's site, do they actually stock them or did they get them in special for you? I noticed that they are attending Sheffield Triples and it would be grate if I could pick some up there. Cheers Stu |

The chaps are done, I had a mess around with the flags from the German site and the end result is ok, not as good as commercial flags but they look ok, hopefully making a debut at Fisticuffs in a months time! Tally Ho! |

Pictures are on the Fisticuffs 2009 gallery, TDfG yahoo and Blood and Iron Yahoo groups, rather nice I thought, another large game booked for Bovington in July, Tally Ho! |

Ben, You're welcome. It is a great way to get at excellent source material which is otherwise unavailable. It is where I got my photocopy and CD of the Royal Prussian War Ministry history of Prussian flags, which is a real goldmine. And Hottenroth is the source on Saxon flags of all periods. And the service was very quick as well. Where would we be without the internet?! Andrew |
