After finding out about the new up-coming Earth Force Marines range from Rebel Minis . . .

. . . I can't help but keep coming back to this idea (SF geodesic domes):

The problem is that I can't even begin to figure out how to make something like it for 15mm, even one with the most minimal triangular pieces.

PLEASE, any suggestions out there?

Thanks.

Take a look at the "freebies/downloads" at DP9. Lots of "tents" that could be used as is or scaled up a little to 15mm.

Saber6 has the best idea, backup would be checking your local toy store or education supply store for a set of basic geometric shapes with a d20 shaped piece with no numbers.

Hang tight until Easter. There's a fairly common line of faceted (geodesic) plastic easter eggs out there. Considering you could use both halves of the egg…you'd be knee deep in domes with just a single bag.

Looking at the picture link from your links it looks like these are hexagons with pentagons as fillers rather than lots of triangles.

This is borne out from link but how you cut out a triangle with sides:
Edge A = .3486
Edge B = .4035
Edge C = .4124

has me beat grin frown grin

maybe one of these will be simpler link evil grin

Excellent ideas!!!

Particularly the "globe":

I guess I could cut out the pieces shown at the bottom, right?

Now, once I overcome the design part, how would I go about turning the paper original and making a master for duplication?

Suggestions?

Thanks.

PS. Cloud Captain, if I don't get around to this any time soon, I will take up your idea and work with one of those! Thanks.

"Hang tight until Easter."

[looks at calendar]

Which is to say, head for your local craft and/or drug stores NOW.

Soccer balls are geodesic double-domes.

Just find one in the right scale, preferably made of plastic, and cut it in half.

The UFO Moonbase plastic model kits utilizes them, but not sure if the size would work for your needs.

I'll second the recommendations for the geodesic Easter eggs. I remember seeing them last year, and thinking, "There's *gotta* be a use for these things," but I passed them by. If I see some this year, I'll let you know, CC, and pick up extras if you need me to.

You can always build an icosahedron, and cut it in half:

(Jumbo 20-sided dice are also an option…. ;)

Not quite Geodesic Domes, but they ARE SciFi tents:

Use said giant d20 to make an RTV mold and cast up your own by the jillions in resin.

Hmmm.

Here are some clips with those SF tents in the background.

Look at 4:23 into this one:

They're a bit small, but I have used plastic golf balls cut in half in my 15mm Traveller game.

Cacique Caribe10 Jun 2009 9:49 p.m. PST

As in toy golf balls?

CC:

Yep. Annoyed my cats until I gave them some of my REAL golf balls instead & they distained the toy ones.

Some experiments – resin version soon. Scale 15mm but those are +28mm minis…

golf ball cut in half would be cheap and interesting.

Ooooooo. I really like those!!!

What textures would you want on the paper structures ? I need at least two ideas :D

Earth-like camouflage [green/brown/black…] and Mars / desert planet colors of red ? Or maybe some old rusty metal and brand-new blue sheen metal / plasteel ;)

Your choice, I just need to know the details to create the PDFs…

Cacique Caribe30 Jun 2009 8:04 p.m. PST

Hmmm.

I have never bought or used paper terrain before, so this question will probably sound silly . . . are colors added to the pdf file or are they a product of the paper they are printed on?

CC

Pole Bitwy PL30 Jun 2009 8:13 p.m. PST

The colors will be added as textures onto the 'blank' line art of the buildings in the PDF file. While its possible to have the 'blanks' colored interactively by the user, its a lot easier to pre-render / pre-color the line art for color printing on typical computer printer paper. If you prefer to print on colored paper than you would require untextured line art I think…
