Obviously a subjective question. No right or wrong answers. For me, it is the French Foreign Legion. Romance-wise, they leave the British in the dust, and really colorful Beau Geste style scenarios are the norm. My number two, for a very different reason -extreme versatility- would be the British Naval Brigade. |

Afghans. They combine a wretched regular army with unreliable irregulars. Plus, they have to go against the most competent colonial army, backed by splendid "martial races" troops that hate your guts. What's not to like? |

Maoris ! They dance, they stick out their tongues to frighten enemies, they eat parts of their defeated foe's bodies, are fierce, brave to a fault, great fortification engineers, I could go on but I'm running out of breath. |

Austrians, 1850-60s. Pretty, and expectations management is easy. Prussians, 1866-1870. For those who like winning. |

Austrians of 1866. They are almost doomed to fail, but who cares as they are fighting the evil Prussians

On reflection maybe I should revise that view. Garibaldi's Redshirts would be another good choice. Mind you I haven't got any- yet. |

For me, it's Victoria's Secret Service; the scanty facts on this outfit's undercover activities are obscured by a veil of opium smoke & magic mirrors. Myths of the most revealing designs of the VSS may have inspired such theatrical productions as "The Assasination Bureau", David Niven's "Casino Royal" & "The Wild Wild West". |

Canadian army of 1885. Although they had a short run (3 months), they combine the colour of the British home army with the frontier character of the US army and the variety of uniforms on campaign of the French army. |
Martin Rapier | 08 Mar 2009 10:30 a.m. PST |
If you want to win, Kitcheners Army of 1888. Not much arguing with Lee Metfords or Maxim guns. If you want dash, colour, romance, the hopeless bayonet charge
. then 1866 Austrians. If you want a lot of badly remembered quotes from 'The Leopard', then Garibaldini. |

The Legion – vive la morte, vive la guerre, vive la legion etrangere After that, I think Fraser has a good choice with the Canadian Army of 1885 How about the Boxer Rebellion relief columns? Cossacks, Japanese infantry, Sikhs, French Marines, German Seebattalion, US Army – how 'bout them apples? |
Der Alte Fritz | 09 Mar 2009 8:11 a.m. PST |
The US Marines as depicted in the film, The Wind and the Lion. I can't recall the actor's name (he was also in the TV series Dallas), but I really liked his spunk and no nonsense approach to storming the royal palace. |

Inquisitor: All in good time. I still have to assemble the hoverbots on their stands and get the minibots painted. I am waiting on the last of the toolbots to arrive as well, but they are a quick paint. Flat black spray, brass, a little green and oily steel, and there you have it. Could get all nine left to be done (of ten) in an evening, given a lack of interruptions. I expect to photo the whole horde next week. Not that I won't be adding more to it in the future, but its the start of them. Maybe put some of my Martians in a shot as if in battle against them? Intersting

British Army of the Indian Mutiny – every single unit can be painted in a distinctly different uniform and be historically correct. And you can fudge a little and still not be far off the mark. And the enemy can be fairly colorful as well, especially the retainer forces of local princes. Who really wants to paint thirty identical units? Oh, and you can adapt the figures for a variety of other conflicts, like the Maoris, Burma, Philippines, China – maybe Africa at a stretch. And they aren't too far off the mark (some of them) for going up against the Sikhs and the Aghans albeit with a little license. Versatility without drudgery. G. |
